Walter Scott Worthing, 51
WELLS - On June 3, 2016, surrounded by those he loved the most (including his dog, Clancy), Walter Scott Worthing of Wells, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, went to join his daughter, Sara, in heaven.
Walt, the oldest of three brothers, was born on Feb. 17, 1965, to Jean (Hayes) Welch and Robert Worthing. He graduated from Wells High School in 1983, leaving a lasting impression with his antics as well as his skills on the football field. He met the love of his life, Cheryl Risley, and asked her to marry him after only four months of courtship.
Walt was a dedicated employee of Forbes Hotels and later Lafayette Oceanfront Resort for 33 years. Walt also coached the Wells-Ogunquit Youth football team for over two decades. He coached with passion, mentoring hundreds of youth. He taught them skills they would carry off the field and apply to daily life. Those kids became pillars of the community, often citing Walt's influence as a driving force…and many of them stayed in touch over the years.
When he was no longer coaching football, he played softball in a men's league for 15 years, which brought about many great times and memories not to mention countless stories, friendships and laughs.
Walt's life became even more blessed in 1993 with the birth of their daughter Sara, the light of his life. Nothing could brighten Walt's eyes more than the presence of his beloved daughter.
Walt was a giant of a man with an even bigger heart. His advice was often sought and his wisdom was a moral compass for so many. When one would find themselves at a crossroads, it helped to ask, "What would Walt say or do?" You always knew where you stood with Walt. He set the standards high so when he said he was proud of you, it was the ultimate compliment. Walt was a hugger and he did it without reserve. He enveloped you in his giant arms and drew you close. The epitome of a good man, he was the glue that held family and friends together. The annual Christmas Eve parties were hosted at his house, where friends and family breezed in and out all evening. It was the highlight of the season and all looked forward to being together in his presence. Walt's house was the gathering place to celebrate life and where many came together for support when life threw a curve ball.
There was nothing in the world more important to Walt than his family. Every aspect of his life revolved around Cheryl and Sara. The center of his very existence, he provided them love, stability, was a pillar of strength and a model of courage.
He adored the children of the family and it was a tradition to take newborn family members to meet Walt where he cradled them in his giant arms and cooed to them. As they grew older, he lovingly teased them mercilessly. They often were afraid of him for his sheer size and booming voice, yet it was him from whom they sought approval and it was in his arms they felt safe.
He touched the lives of so many people. Those who knew him were proud to refer to him as "mentor," "coach," "teammate" and most of all "friend." And then there were those most honored to be family. While we may not see him anymore, if you are still for a moment, surely you will feel his love. He will be the sparkle on the water, the wind on your face, the light in the sunshine... for his spirit cannot be separated from those he loved.
And Walt's final advice to you would be, "Hugs! Hug your family and tell them you love them!"
Walter was predeceased by his daughter, Sara; father, Bobby; and grandparents on both sides.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Cheryl; mother, Jean; brother, Jim and his wife Renee; brother, Darrell and his wife Jennifer; nieces Jordan, Amanda and Chelsea; nephews Zachary, Nicholas, Shawn and Beck; as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many, many friends.
