William York Obituary

William Freiday York, 52

DURHAM - William Freiday York, 52, of Osprey, Fla., and Durham, passed away on early Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016. Bill was born on Sept. 26, 1964, in Portland.

He was predeceased by his father, Wayne F. York, in 2005 and his birth father, William F. Freiday, in 1966.

He attended school in Yarmouth, graduated from Yarmouth High School in 1983, and received his B.S. from Bates College in 1987 with a major in economics. During his spare time while in high school, he worked at the Homeward Inn and while attending college he worked part-time at L.L.Bean. He also studied at the Tuck School of Business in 1989.

Bill was an avid fly fisherman and made several trips with friends over the years to Labrador, Canada. He was most passionate about boating near his childhood home on Cousins Island, and skiing in Maine's western mountains.

For nearly 30 years, Bill was a marketing executive in multiple business including operational planning, marketing, e-commerce, social media, merchandising and call center operations throughout the United States and Internationally. At L.L.Bean he was a senior manager for international marketing from 1992-1998, and was on the board of directors of Outward Bound.

In 1998 he became marketing director for the Dell Corporation. He was employed by Interland, Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia, as vice president of marketing, and later at Camping World, Inc. in Bowling Green, Kentucky, as senior vice president of marketing. Beginning in 2003 he worked as a marketing consultant with Customer Marketing Associates, Inc. of Osprey, Florida. During those years he did marketing consulting throughout the industry including Crutchfield Corporation, Peruvian Connections, National Wholesale, and Vermont Teddy Bear as acting president.

Bill is survived by his loving mother, Dorothy M. York, of Durham. He leaves behind his partner and friend of many years, Walter L. Erdman; and his dear friends from high school days, John Sumner, James Goodbody and Dan Edwards; as well as several special cousins and friends.

A celebration of life is to be held at the Cousins Island Chapel on May 6, 2017, at 10 a.m., and will be followed by interment at Cousins Island Cemetery, which will be followed by a gathering at the Island Community Center.

While it has been several years since Bill's death, I just became aware of it as part of an "In Memorium" associated with Bates class of 1987, 35th reunion. Bill and I were good friends for a time at Bates although I was a class behind him. If I'm being honest, smoking cigarettes was the first thing we had in common but we spent many hours opining (and he could do that very well) on the state of the world and how to fix it. We kept in touch while he was at LL Bean after Tuck but lost it at some point. He was always funny and kind and My deepest condolences to Walter and the rest of his family.

Rest peacefully. I graduated college with Bill and had the privilege of getting to know him during our senior year. Soft spoken and always kind, he was someone you could always count on. I am deeply saddened that he is gone from this world too soon and I wish peace for all those he loved and who loved him.

Bill, may you rest in peace. I know we have been out of touch for many years, but you were a very important part of my life at a very difficult time and I appreciated your support so much. Of course working together was always a joy, you were so quick thinking, hard working and you could be such fun. I always remember you fondly. My condolences Dorothy on your son's passing and at such a young age. You and your family will be in my prayers.

Dottie - I was so sorry to hear about Bill's passing. I am Beverly Lindahl and I was married to Dick Lindahl's son, Peter. I met Bill (and Levi) briefly several years ago at Dick's house on Littlejohn and he was "bigger than life"! A very happy and gentle soul! I'm sure you have a huge whole in your heart without him and his smile.

I will call you soon and introduce myself. Dick is at a nursing home in Portland but is doing better every day.

I remember William from first grade and insisting everyone call him William, not Billy. My condolences to his family and friends from another "island kid".

So sorry for your loss. You have my deepest sympathy. I didn't get to know him well; but he was very friendly to his classmates of Yarmouth High.

I miss you Will. We became dear friends over the years. And I will always cherish the special bond we shared. We laughed, we cried, and we had our differences. But no matter what ,we where there for each other! Through good times and bad.I will always have our memories. I often think about how you changed our sleepy little neighborhood. You made a significant change for the better for Bay Acres. You pulled the community together, we actually got to know our neighbors. And developed new friendships with some. You made this possible. And I thank you! Now every year when the Christmas lights go up around the boat basin. I think of you! You will always be a part of Bay Acres. Rest in peace my freind. You will be greatly missed by all. Love you Will!
