Doris Day Obituary
Doris Weyl Day, age 83, wife of the late Miles Day, died on Jan. 20, 2010 at Whitehorse Village in Newtown Square where she had resided since 1999. Her husband predeceased her by twenty days. Born in Philadelphia and raised on Harvey Street in Germantown, she was the daughter of Charles and Elinor G. Weyl. Upon graduation from the Stevens School, Mrs. Day studied for three years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and for one year at the Art Students League in New York City. She was married in 1948. Due to her husband's Naval service and many transfers by his employer, the Pennsylvania Railroad (Conrail), Mrs. Day lived in ten cities in five states between 1950 and 1962. During her husband's deployment to the Pacific during the Korean War she lived in Washington, D.C. where she continued to study painting at the Corcoran School of Arts. In 1957 Mrs. Day won a competition to design and paint a monumental mural, still on display, for the newly built Fairmount High School in Kettering, Ohio. Mrs. Day also exhibited her work at The Dayton Art Institute, Cincinnati Museum, Carnegie Museum, the Art Association of Harrisburg, the Three Rivers Art Festival in Pittsburgh, several galleries and, for many years, the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show. In 1962 the Day family moved to Wayne, Pa. where her children attended the Radnor schools. From 1980 to 1999 Mrs. Day resided on Rodman Street in Philadelphia. Mrs. Day was an award-winning competitive ballroom dancer. She also rescued and adored her many dogs and cats. Throughout her life, Mrs. Day spent her happiest times on Long Beach Island, New Jersey first in Harvey Cedars as a child and later at her own beachfront home in Barnegat Light. She is survived by four children: Jeannie Day Roggio ( Bob ) of Malvern, Pa., Kenneth ( Kim ) Day ( wife Kim ) of St. Davids, Pa. and Telluride, Colo., Susanna Day Creely ( Ray ) of Chesterfield, Mo., Mia Day Burroughs ( Scott ) of Chapel Hill, N.C., nine grandchildren, three great grand children and half-brother Charles "Kif" Weyl. Aside from her husband, she was pre-deceased by her beloved sister Jean Weyl Rossheim, foster sister Relli Katz, and half-sister Mary Weyl. Services will be held privately.
