Frank Coulson Obituary

Frank L. Coulson Jr., July 16, 1946- November 22, 2011, age 65, died peacefully on November 22, 2011 after a long battle with lung cancer. Coulson, a resident of Bryn Mawr, PA was a managing director of Goldman Sachs in New York. He spent the first half of his career in the firm's Philadelphia office where he was co-resident manager and from 1990 forward he commuted daily to Wall Street. He was elected to the partnership of the firm in 1990 and at the time of his death was the longest tenured employee of its Securities Division. Coulson was a beloved and legendary figure at Goldman where he was respected for his work ethic, his collegiality, his long-standing client relationships and his incredible humor. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Coulson served in the U.S. Navy as a naval ship navigator from 1968 until his discharge in 1974, attaining the rank of Full Lieutenant. A native Philadelphian, he was a graduate Upper Darby High School, and then attended the University of Pennsylvania on an ROTC scholarship where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Moore School of Engineering in 1968. While in the Navy, Coulson earned his MBA in Finance from Penn's Wharton School of Business. Coulson and his wife Sarah Miller Coulson, were major donors to the University of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He was a member of the Merion Cricket Club, Gulph Mills Golf Club, Pohoqualine Fish Association, and the Jupiter Island Club in Hobe Sound FL. He was a resident of Hobe Sound, Florida and a summer resident of Long Beach Island, NJ. A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Sarah; children, Kim Macaione ( Joseph ), Frank, III ( Lesley), Elizabeth Libre ( John ), Katherine Currie ( Colman ); brother, Warren; sister, Carol Kirwin and eight grandchildren. His first wife, Linda L. Shafer, predeceased him in 1998. A memorial service will be held on December 1, 2011 at 11 am at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Gladwyne, PA. Internment was private.
