Joan Prewitt Obituary

Joan Prewitt (nee Taylor) of Wayne, PA, born on June 16, 1939, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2021. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, David Prewitt, and three daughters, Mary-Alice (Dale) Michaels, Katherine (Sylvester) and Elizabeth (Andrew); her five grandchildren, Aidan, Declan, Niall, Jack and Tess, as well as her sister Katherine Hutchinson (Dan). Joan (known to many as Joani) was an avid garden enthusiast and expert floral artist. She exhibited regularly in the Philadelphia Flower Show winning numerous blue-ribbon awards for her submissions and often donated her work for public benefit. She was beloved as a dynamic and generous personality and strongly believed in giving back. Joan was a graduate of The Baldwin School for Girls in Bryn Mawr and Hollins College in Virginia. Her work career began as a teacher and later as a substitute teacher during her children’s primary school years. She worked as an integral part of her husband’s private law practice when it began as an office manager, and in later years worked as a successful real estate agent. She cared deeply about education of young women, especially her daughters. Joan was heavily involved in supporting Baldwin’s mission in various leadership positions, including serving on the Board twice (as head of the Baldwin Mother’s and Alumni associations). In addition, she served on the Board of the Junior League of Philadelphia as a Sustainer, the Board of the Women’s Resource Center, and she was the second woman to serve on the vestry of St. Martin’s Church. Joan was a passionate supporter of veterans throughout her life, beginning with David’s Army service in Vietnam in 1964 as a helicopter pilot, and was a Co-Chair of the Veteran’s Committee of Surrey Services. Joan was also actively involved in planning several of her husband’s Dartmouth class reunions and was on the executive board of the Class of 1961. Her life and legacy left an impact on many and she will be greatly missed. A celebration of life is planned for a later date. STUARD FUNERAL – NEWTOWN SQUARE A FAMILY TRADITION SINCE 1822

I met Joan through flower arranging; she was incredibly generous with her time, ideas, supplies, stories, and even her home. If she saw a need, she filled it. She made sure her many friends were exposed to all things she felt important. She was program chairman for the Jr. League Sustainers' garden club, She was on the Vestry at St. Martin's Church...leading many projects she saw would be beneficial. She wasn't afraid to ask questions to learn more. She filled her time working for others....

Joani was truly one of the Greatest Of All Time. After 40 years away, we were reunited and grateful for the fun times spent in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Yosemite. We will always keep you in our hearts.

Joani was the heart of our close knit group of helicopter pilots and VN vets. Since our separation of military service in '65, she kept the lines of communication open; our group has been in contact since seeing each other when possible at pilot reunions. We'll miss you, Joani but will never be forgotten.

I was fortunate to have taught Joani and Dave’s three wonderful daughters when I was part of The Baldwin School Art Department. Through the girls I came to know Joani and Dave. What a great couple! They were a team that was early forged on the anvil of the Vietnamese War. A terrific team that was powered by love and respect. A team that created those daughters, friends wherever they went, and excellent adventures through a long and truly full life.
And Joani? What a force to contend with! You don’t take care of a family and work while your husband is on the other side of the globe getting shot at while flying “a low, slow target” without grit. Joani was strong, intelligent, focused, involved, funny, loving, loyal and gracious. She was one of those special people Barbara and I are grateful to have known.

David,
I am truly sorry for your loss. Joan brought such fun and spirit to our Flower Show family. The happiest day was the day she said she wanted to be one of The Siblings. I will miss her nurturing presence.
With love,
Adie
