John Howkins, M.D. John H. F. Howkins, MD, of Ardmore, PA passed away on February 26th, 2015 at age 93 at Bryn Mawr Hospital. Dr. Howkins was born in Baltimore, MD May 26, 1921. Dr. Howkins practiced psychiatry for almost 60 years, and was known for treating many patients with little monetary compensation. He graduated from Amherst College and Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons and was a WWII veteran. He served at Fort Bragg with the 82 Airborne but as a physician he was not required to jump. He enjoyed singing and performed with the Commuters and the Orpheus Club. He was a direct descendent of Thomas Heyward, a signer of the Declaration of Independence from South Carolina and of Esther Ball, sister of George Washington’s mother, Mary Ball. Dr. Howkins is survived by his beloved wife Agnes, and children Reyna and John Howkins(Nancy MacGregor). He is also survived by four grandchildren and one great grand child and his sisters Betsy Holmes and Mary Ball Howkins and her family, his sister-in-law Marguerita Howkins, brother in law Lawrence Devine (Mary), and his niece Maryann Howkins and her family. He was preceded in death by his first wife Phyllis Dana, his daughter Ann Chinn Howkins, his brothers Guerard H., Thomas H. and Anthony C. Howkins., and his parents Guerard Heyward Howkins and Elizabeth Cassidy Howkins. The service will be held at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, Lancaster Avenue and Pennswood Rd, Bryn Mawr, PA on Friday, March 13 at 11:00 am. Visitors may come meet with the family starting at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Bryn Mawr Hospital would be appreciated.
