John Newhall Obituary

John Harrison Newhall, a loving family man and loyal friend, passed away on January 6th, 2018 at the age of 84 due to complications from pneumonia. He is survived by his three children, Carol N. Neilson (Ted), Thomas B. Newhall (Sally), and Daniel W. Newhall (Jennifer), as well as his eight grandchildren, Sarah, Hannah, Annie, Wyatt, Emily, Claire, Charlie, and Henry. He will be welcomed into heaven by “the best thing that happened in my life”, his wonderful wife of 47 years, Jane W. Newhall, PhD, his twin brother Tom (whom he lost at the age of twelve), his parents Blackwell and Mary Large Harrison Newhall, as well as by his many great friends and Golden Retrievers, that were always by his side. Coming from a family with Colonial roots on both sides, he always cherished traditional American values and education, and lived a balanced life dictated by the “three-legged stool”: church, school, and family. A graduate of The Haverford School, Williams College, and Harvard Business School, John developed a wide range of interests: “a love of life-long learning, travel, and the outdoor life, as well as a not sufficiently repressed need to express my views.” His values were also formed as a child while his father served in the Pacific Seas during WWll, and his own service as a Naval Air Intelligence Officer. John’s business career was varied and interesting, with eleven jobs in seven industries, in six different locations, notably, 20 years in the food industry, including Director of Corporate Planning and General Manager-Europe at H.J. Heinz Co. (Pittsburgh and Brussels); VP of Marketing at Sunoco; CEO of two advertising agencies (Philadelphia & NYC); Principal Management Consultant at SRI International (Palo Alto); and CEO at Newcomen Society. John also served on the Boards of Directors of numerous civic institutions, including the Pennsylvania Economy League, Committee of Seventy, Chamber of Commerce, World Affairs Council, Bryn Mawr Hospital, The Haverford School, Red Cross and Junior Achievement. An active fundraiser for the Church and his three alma maters, John was very proud of his 100% class participation. Every day was a gift to enjoy and share experiences in the wonders of the world, never missing a summer on Mt. Desert Island in Maine. He was happy that he was able to live in his childhood home up until his final days. John regularly kept in contact with friends and family, and his presence will be greatly missed. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 13th at 11:00 at the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, PA, followed by a reception at the parish house. Contributions may be sent to the Haverford School, the Church of the Redeemer, or the Bryn Mawr Hospital Foundation. Chadwick & McKinney Funeral Home Inc. www.chadwickmckinney.com

I am so sorry to hear about John's passing. I only really knew him from the Civic but enjoyed his stories and insight-fullness. He really cared and it showed - you could tell he belong to the Greatest generation. He had so much pride in Penn Valley and seemed to have lived a wonderful life. May he rest in peace.

To John Newhall's survivors:

I was the most casual of acquaintances. A retired Haverford Prof, 84 yrs old, I live along the Nature Trail, where I first spotted John: the only person my age who looks ( looked) to be as strong & fit as myself. ( Altho he was bigger, and better looking ) We became locker room buddies at the Bryn Mawr College Pool, where we both worked out, and chatted. Family was of course a major topic - he loved you all! In recent months I had noticed, and regretted, his absence, , but only thought to check the obituaries just now. While my regret at his leaving cannot match r yours, I would simply note that the reach of a good man's life can be a long and wide one.

Sincerely, Roger Lane

I met John at the Cricket Library at Haverford College many years ago. Generations of Newhalls played cricket in Philadelphia and internationally from the 1850s on. John was generous enough to donate a number of cricket-related items to the Library where they are prominently displayed. We chatted several times a year at various events and both looked forward to the next time we'd talk. He was a warm, sincere person who will be missed by me and all who knew him.

I saw John infrequently after Williams where we on the swimming team, but it was a pleasure to see him and enjoy his warmth. I remember fondly the class gathering he and Jane hosted at their home in Maine in the early 2000s. It is sad to see him go.

John was a wonderful friend who lived right down the street from me on Winsford Rd, Bryn Mawr, and taught me how to ride a bicycle as a 5 yr old.. Later we enjoyed the deb circuit together. We both did the Navy, and caught up with each other again at Campbell Soup (my first job after the Navy, John worked in the Campbell marketing dept.)
> He, Lyn Brock, Whitey Perrot and I set up a "snake ranch" at Deep Dene Rd. John always gave me credit for introducing him to his wife Jane at a Bryn Mawr College mixer, but I never thought I deserved this honor.
> We exchanged Xmas cards each year, I sent his out on Jan 3--I was late, I do hope it arrived in time.
