Joseph Bond Obituary

Joseph M. Bond 90, a Philadelphia entrepreneur, died peacefully Tuesday July 24, 2012 after a long battle with dementia. Born in Philadelphia, Joseph Bond graduated from North Catholic High School in 1939. He proceeded to the Pennsylvania Merchant Marine Academy where he graduated with honors. He served as an officer in the Merchant Marines during WWII where he participated in the first shipment of medical and war supplies that was instrumental in breaking the siege of Leningrad during WWII now known as St Petersburg. Following the war, he pioneered the creation of insulated and tempered glass and held various patents in sun and sound control. Joe's main focus was always safety. You can find his tempered glass in patio doors and in the entranceways of important commercial buildings such as the John Hancock Building and the Sears Tower in Chicago. As story has it, while visiting his father in the hospital, he noticed the venetian blinds hanging on the windows were filthy. When he returned home, the "idea man" went to his lab, invented the hermetically sealed window unit with venetian blinds enclosed between two panes of glass, that were controlled magnetically. Joe Bond was truly a Renaissance man. He was experimenting with Green design long before it became popular as exemplified in his use of active & passive solar energy panels. Most importantly, Joe was a family man. Preceaded in death by his adoring wife, Regina Kelly Bond, parents Francis (nee Eaton) and William A. Bond brothers, Bill, Bob, Frank, Richard and sister, Francis. Joe is survived by 8 children, Joseph (Antoinette), Jeffrey (Mary Ann), Stephen (Jackie), Thomas (Nancy), Richard (Charles Santos), Jeanne B. (Rick) Craft, Christopher (Alicia), Lynn B. (Tom) Bruder, 15 grandchildren, sister Mary Jane Tyrell, and sister-in-laws, Patricia Leahy and Elsie Kelly. He was a devout Catholic, a true Samaritan, loyal friend, good tennis partner, enthusiastic body surfer & mostly enjoyed singing around his dining table with family & friends. Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing 9:30-10:45 A.M., Friday morning and Funeral Mass 11 A.M. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 35 Eagle School Rd., Wayne, PA 19087. Int. Private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Joe's memory can be made to Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 8th Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 1001, (866) 232-8484.
