Medford Brown Obituary

Medford Jennings Brown III (Jay): Age 73 passed away on September 16, 2023, after a valiant battle with heart disease. Born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania to Anne Janney Cumings Brown and Medford J. Brown Jr, who predeceased him in life. He is survived by his wife Susan Mulvanerton Grau, whom he loved fiercely, and enjoyed happiness. They enjoyed spending every moment of their Love together and felt lucky to have found each other. Jay attended Episcopal Academy, Williams College, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School where he developed lifelong friendships. He often attended events and reunions with his friends from childhood and school. He spent summers with his cousins at the Woods Hole home of his Janney family. He attended cousins' week until Covid suspended the family get together. He loved his Janney cousins, and they loved him. He also spent his summers as a camp counselor at Camp Kieve in Maine. Jay was a Medical Malpractice Defense attorney, retiring in 2018 from Goldfein and Joseph P.C. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, having previously worked at Masterson, Braunfeld, Maguire and Brown. He represented many healthcare providers, honoring his profession with honesty and professionalism to successful conclusions. Jay was proudest when he defended the underdog. He excelled in his professional skill in law, as well as continuously demonstrating his care for others and humanity. He always exemplified sophisticated grace and kindness. He was often described as the consummate gentleman. He could tell a delightful story, had a wry smile and a twinkle in his eyes. He was beloved, and respected by his community, family, and friends. He loved animals, and his dogs Faith, Hope and Hudson who often gave him great emotional support during his rehabilitation in the past year. After his retirement, he volunteered for several organizations assisting the elderly, and disabled. He was a member of the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, often greeting parishioners on Sundays. Jay was a member of the Union League of Philadelphia, and the Merion Cricket Club in Haverford, Pennsylvania where he had good friends and great dinners. His love of steak was legendary! Jay loved exercise and was at the gym from a very young age, often running, biking, and lifting weights. He was an afficionado of Porsches and fast cars, loving the purr of the turbo engine, Gettysburg, and Civil War history. He is survived by his son Medford J. Brown IV (Mary Gordon), and their children Avery, Taylor, and Max. His daughter Emily Kennedy (Chris), and their son Caleb. He is also survived by his brother Anthony (Dede) of Haverford, Pennsylvania, a stepbrother Lawrence Master. He is also survived by eight stepchildren. He is predeceased by his sister Anne Cumings Dybwad, and his brother Pierce (Peter) Cumings. Jay was one of my best friends in law school. I remember him as a person dedicated to learning but with an incredible sense of humor.

I remember Jay from our time together at Montgomery, McCracken, many years ago. I can still see his wry smile, tip-toeing into our conversations. He was a good guy.

I only grew to know Jay in our gym, to which we all returned once it reopened after the pandemic. The two of us chatted about a range of topics, and it was remarkable how, even after he became ill, he never complained, and was always eager to turn the conversation away from himself. A true gentleman is the best way I can describe him. All of us at the gym are sad to see him go. From a casual friend, Kristin.
