It is with deep sadness the family reports the passing of Bernard "Bernie" A. Schaab on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018 after a battle with Heart Disease starting in 2015.
He was born on Feb. 20, 1942 in Grand Rapids son of the late Floyd and Dorothy (Sieracki) Schaab. Bernie retired from the Rapistan Company after 40 years of employment. He was a former stock car driver at the Speedrome and Berlin Raceway. Along the way he was introduced to S. Sessions an Indy car driver; where he then worked as a pit crew member at Indianapolis Race Track in the early 1970's. He enjoyed fishing with all of his fishing buddies. He was a member of Saint Bernard's Catholic Church of Irons.
He is survived by his wife and partner; Judy A. (Walker) Schaab, his step-children, Cindy Mucky, Robert Whalen, Deb Whalen and Sharon Whalen, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, four brothers, Dan (Andrea) Schaab, Paul Schaab, Larry (Anna) Schaab and Mike (Pam) Schaab and his special friends, Judith Lambert, David and Mary Chatelein and Mollie and Lou Chambers.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Corey Siekerk.
The family will receive friends at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Irons from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018 with the Evening Vigil Service being prayed at 8:30 p.m.
The family will also receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Arsulowicz Brothers Mortuary at 937 Michigan NE, in Grand Rapids on Friday, Dec. 21, 2018 with a Rosary being prayed at 7:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018 at Saint Isidore Catholic Church at 628 Diamond Avenue, Grand Rapids. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Grand Rapids.
Those wishing to remember Bernard are asked to make a donation in his name to the Heart Failure Clinic in Traverse City. The Herbert Funeral Home and Arsulowicz Brothers Mortuary are in charge of funeral arrangements.

It was a pleasure getting to know Bernie over the past 6 years as our neighbor. He was a good person thru and thru and was always there to lend a helping hand. He will be missed greatly.
