Dennis Cohoon, age 77, of Manistee, Michigan, passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Munson Medical Center, in Traverse City, with his family at his side. Dennis was born in Columbus, Ohio, on November 23, 1945, to the late Ned and Betty (McCormick) Cohoon and raised in Midland, Michigan.
Dennis joined the Army and proudly served his country from 1965 until he was honorably discharged in 1968. He was a 1st Lieutenant, was Airborne qualified, Ranger qualified and served with Special Forces. He earned a Purple Heart and Infantry Badge while serving in Vietnam.
Following his tour in Vietnam, he received a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Ferris State University. His career included a variety of vocations: accounting partnership, Century 21 co-owner, broker of two offices, Ford Dealership Sales Manager and Auto Sales Person.
Following his retirement in 2009, his ambition was to help serve his fellow veterans. He held the following positions with pride: VVA James HUARD Chapter 267 Treasurer, VVA State Council Treasurer, National Region 5 Director, VFW Lyskawa Chapter 7546 Quartermaster, and American Legion Post 364 'Rider'.
He moved to Manistee in 2017 and briefly held the position as Quartermaster for VFW Walsh Post 4499. Due to his unexpected declining health issues, he stepped away.
His passion from an early age of hunting and fishing helped lead him to the Big Bear Sportsman's Club, where he was elected a Director.
Dennis is survived by: his wife of 39 years, Linda; daughter, Gretchen (Carlo) Blackmore; son, Dan McGregor; two grandchildren, Willow and Brianna; sister, Vicki Westbrook; brother, Sid (Jan) Cohoon; sisters-in-law, Denise (Ross) Hohfeldt and Janet (Bruce) Iannicello; nieces and nephews, Brian, Jennifer, John, Kristina, Matt, and Nicki; and their children. He is also survived by many extended family members and friends.
A Memorial and Celebration of His Life will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 9, 2023, at the Big Bear Sportsman's Club, 8927 Puustinen Road, in Kaleva with Military Honors conducted by the VFW Walsh Post 4499.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to: VVA James Huard Chapter 267, VFW Lyskawa Chapter 7546, VFW Walsh Post 4499 or the American Legion Post 364.
