Hugh James O'Hagan, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 surrounded by his family after a short illness on Saturday, November 18, 2023.
He was born on May 26, 1940 in Detroit, MI and moved to Onekama, Michigan in his early years. He was a graduate of Onekama High School class of 1958. He entered the Army following graduation. He served from 1959 through 1962, in Kiserslautern, Germany.
He worked for Michigan Consolidated Gas Company. Due to his knowledge as a distribution clerk in the Army, he was hired immediately. He retired after 34 years at MichCon (now DTE).
He was a past member of the St. Joseph Civic Club, Manistee Clan Muzzle Loading Club, St. Mary's Men's Club and fundraisers, MCC Supporter and volunteer, Matthew 25:35 Food Pantry volunteer. He was active at the former St. Mary of Mount Carmel Shrine Church, as a eucharistic minister, and continued at Divine Mercy Parish of Manistee until his health did not allow.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed golf and attending his children and grandchildren's extracurricular activities. He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and especially time spent with his grandchildren. They helped him plant his garden and watch it grow, sometimes checking on a daily basis. He also loved working with wood, and he made lots of toys, games and even child size picnic tables for his grandchildren. He was a Den Leader for Cub Scouts with his sons.
He married Patricia Skocelas on October 6, 1962, they shared 61 years of marriage and raised 4 wonderful children. He is survived by his loving wife Patricia and his daughters, Tammy and Timm Smith, Ann and Erford Edmondson all of Manistee. His sons Joseph and Michelle (Strom) of Marquette, MI and John and Lindsay (Snyder) of Manistee. Hugh is also survived by one brother Ronald and Joyce (Jorgenson) O'Hagan of Manistee. Three brothers-in-law Richard and Alan Skocelas of Manistee. Gary and Polly Skocelas of Arlington, TX. Two sisters-in-law, JoAnne Krause and Mary (Marzi Gamache) Skocelas both of Manistee. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren Matthew and Lisa (Dust) Smith and great granddaughter Lillian Smith of Ypsilanti, MI., Savannah and Trevor Klump of Westland, MI., Zachary and Alexandria (Mallison) Smith and great grandchildren Rowan and Aria Smith of Manistee. Bradley O'Hagan of Duluth, MN., Douglas and Gregory O'Hagan of Marquette, MI., Dakotah O'Hagan and fiancé Kyle
Sawdon of Grandville, MI., and Jayden O'Hagan of Big Rapids, MI. Hugh is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Charlotte (Gauthier-Coe) O'Hagan, and his step father Alvah Coe. His father and mother-in-law Stanley and Dorothy (Fredericksen) Skocelas. His sister Catherine (O'Hagan) Skocelas of Gladwin. Two brothers-in-law Stanley Skocelas Jr. and Jerome Skocelas.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Divine Mercy Parish (Saint Joseph Catholic Church) in Manistee, on Monday, November 27, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., with Reverend Mitchel Roman celebrant. Burial will follow the mass at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, where the members of the Manistee County United Veterans Council Ritual Squad will give Military Honors. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday morning one hour prior to the funeral mass.
In lieu of flowers memorials will be established for Divine Mercy Parish of Manistee and St. Joseph Catholic Church of Onekama. Envelopes will be available at the church on Monday.
The family would like to extend its gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility and Green Acres of Manistee.
