Paul Swidorski Obituary

Paul Swidorski, age 62 of Manistee, passed away unexpectedly on Friday morning, Feb. 19, 2021.

He was born on Sept. 8, 1958, in Manistee, son of the late Robert "Bob" and Mary Ann "Bonnie" Swidorski.

Paul was a graduate of Manistee High School, the Class of 1976. He married the love of his life, Julie Russell, on March 19, 1982, and they went on to have three children.

For nearly the past four decades, Paul worked tirelessly to build his company, Swidorski Bros. Excavating LLC, while building strong relationships with his clients and the community.

Because of his perseverance, sacrifice and generosity, Swidorski Bros. Excavating LLC, which began as nothing more than one used backhoe and a dream, has grown exponentially to become a cornerstone business in the Manistee County area. Paul was incredibly proud of the fact that all three of his children followed in his footsteps and helped make the business what it is today and will continue to be.

Paul appreciated the beauty of simple things, like the tranquility of nature. He loved hunting, fishing and took pride in the land he owned. He found peace in the outdoors.

A jack of all trades, Paul was quick to help those in need, no matter the size of the task. And he was especially giving to family.

At his core, Paul was a selfless family man. Providing for and protecting those closest to him was his purpose in life.

He saw all three of his children bring children of their own into the world, and he soaked in every second of being a grandfather. One of his favorite ways to spend an afternoon was outside with his grandsons - casting lines into the pond, picking apples off the tree, or looking for buried "treasure" in the yard.

Paul is survived by Julie, his wife of nearly 39 years; his son Matt and daughter-in-law Lindsey Swidorski; his daughter Megan and son-in-law Dylan Savela; his son Mason and daughter-in-law Briann Swidorski; his four grandchildren, Talon and Bowen Swidorski, River Savela and Kason Swidorski; and his father- and mother- in-law Ted and Judy Ross. He is also survived by four siblings, James (Sheryl) Swidorski, Jon Swidorski, Jill (Rob) Nowak and Patrick (Chris) Swidorski, all of Manistee, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents.

There will be a visitation for Paul at St. Joseph Church of Manistee on Tuesday, March 2, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. with Reverend Basil Lek celebrant.

Those wishing to remember Paul are asked to consider a donation in his name to the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, 3860 N. Long Lake Road, Ste. D, Traverse City, MI, 49684.

The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements.

I am so saddened by this news. I contacted Paul when we had shore problems at our newly purchased cottage on Fox Farm Road in about 1998 or so. Paul advised us and did the work to help contain and restore our bluff. Over the years we had reason to contact him again...and again...and we couldn't have been more pleased with the advice, assistance and work he provided. When we reluctantly decided to sell our much beloved cottage in 2017--after 20 wonderful years--because of bluff problems, we again hired Paul to help us with the bluff. I told him I thought of him as my "4th son," since I felt he was so very caring about our concerns. He was truly a wonderful man and I and my family are so sorry that he is gone....Our sincerest condolences to his family. Customers and friends, Rosemary and Chuck Kowalski

Words fall short of expressing my sorrow for your loss. Paul and I met through his business, and quite quicky became good friends. Paul and I have been friends for the last twenty years. We spoke almost daily. Paul was tremendously dedicated to his family and business. He was extremely proud of his children, and I know that he was grateful that he was able to work with them daily. He was an excellent businessman and had an indefatigable work ethic. Paul and his family expanded the business over the last twenty years to what it is today. He was proud of that. He was a caring guy and had a terrific sense of humor even under grinding pressure. I will miss my friend. Please accept my deepest condolences. I am thinking of you and your family during this difficult time.

Paul was one of my best friends from high school. That bond we formed when we were younger only grew stronger as we got older because of who Paul was. He had a caring soul. I liked to tease him that he owed all of his success to me, because in our younger days, when we were both suffering through a series of unrewarding jobs, trying to figure out what to do with our lives, he finally landed what appeared to be a promising position. The night before he was to start, however, we went out to celebrate my birthday - he wasn't about to let me celebrate alone - and, well, the rest is history. Instead of a long career at that new job, he was forced to reconfigure his plans, and thus, eventually, Swidorski Brothers Excavating was born. I'll miss him more than I can express. Losing him has gutted me and everyone who knew him. My heart goes out to Julie and his family - he loved you all so much.

We are shocked and saddened by Paul’s passing. Such a loss to his family, friends, business and community. He helped us plan for the safety of our house and patiently and frequently kept us updated, calm, and gave us peace of mind. Again, such an irreplaceable loss to so many people.

We have lost an amazing human being who cared deeply for everyone. He saved our home from falling into Lake Michigan as I am sure he saved countless other homes and structures. Our heartfelt prayers go to his family and may his memory be a blessing.
