Gary Curtis Smail
MANSFIELD: Gary Curtis Smail, age 71, of Mansfield, died Sunday, November 22, 2015 under the care of OhioHealth Hospice at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.
He was born November 21, 1944 in Millersburg, Ohio the son of the late Alton and Fern (Gilbert) Smail. Gary was a graduate of Glenmont High School and was an Army veteran serving in Vietnam. He had been employed at Ashland Times Gazette for several years and finished his career as a truck driver for Intra Trucking in Mansfield. A talented musician, Gary loved music, especially bluegrass, and playing his guitar. His hobbies included four wheeling, riding and caring for horses, spending time outdoors and camping - all of which were enjoyed with his best friend, Harry Belcher. He was a member of Loudonville American Legion Post #257 and The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, Mansfield Venus Lodge #152.
Gary is survived by his wife: Dolores (Bond) Smail, whom he wed on July 17, 1970; 4 children: Randy (Anita) Cains of Shiloh, Regenia (Steve) Shaver of Shelby, Ronda Lambert of Shiloh and Gary Smail of Louisiana; 12 grandchildren: Jessie (Shirley) Cains, Mandy (Ryan) Gillam, Amber (Aaron) Thompson, Ryan (Brittany) Cains, Aaron Shaver, Austin Shaver, Tonia (Josh) Amonds, Michael (Jake) Lambert, Jenna Lambert (Steven Kopp), Jared Lambert, Matt Smail, Megan (Trevor) Smail; 15 great grandchildren; 2 brothers; Ronnie (Barb) Smail of Ashland and Charlie (Inez) Smail of Glenville; 2 sisters: Carol "Cookie" (Ralph) Fortune of Nashville, OH and Mary Huntsburger of Loudonville; and 2 aunts: Helen "Toots" (Lee) Cochran of West Lafayette, OH and Thelma Doty of MO. He was preceded in death by: his parents; a grandson: Joshua Lambert; a great grandson: Jayden Amonds; and 2 brothers: Robert "Bob" Smail and Richard "Dick "Smail.
Family and friends are welcome on Friday, November 27, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby where Masonic Services will be conducted at 7:45 PM. Funeral services will be on Saturday at the funeral home at 11:00 AM with Bruce Copley officiating. Burial will be in Franklin Church Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Loudonville American Legion. Memorial expressions may be made to the family.
