Geraldine Hansen Obituary

Geraldine (Jerry) Bogart Hansen

ASHLAND: Revelations 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

On November 13, 2014, Jerry received eternal rest. She was born on June 13, 1927 to Roland James and Iva Helen (Brewer) Bogart. Jerry (also known as "Bogie") graduated from Oregon Clay High School and was voted Most Likely to Become a Famous Blues Singer. She then attended nursing school at Mercy Hospital in Toledo, Ohio and graduated with her Registered Nurse degree - in the days when nurses wore capes and starched their hats and wore white uniforms. She was a true Florence Nightingale. Jerry married Roy Edgerton Hansen on May 12, 1951. As Roy was transferred around the Midwest by Clark Equipment she had their children: Laura (Ohio), Linda (Pennsylvania) - born on her Mom's 27th birthday, Nancy (Illinois) and Michael (Indiana).

Jerry lived a full and rich life. She was a much loved mother and grandmother and was very involved in the activities of her children and her community in Trail Creek, Indiana, where her children were raised. Jerry's nursing career spanned many areas on nursing - surgical, intensive care, private duty, hospital charge nurse and she was part of the medical team that performed the first open heart surgery in Michigan City, Indiana.

Jerry was a nurse for the Girl Scout Day Camp for many years as Nurse Iodine. She was den mother of a Boy Scout troop for several years. She served as camp nurse at Camp Awareness, a camp for autistic children started by her much loved daughter-in-law, Susan Saffer Hansen, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jerry passed her love of music to her children and grandchildren. She was a constant champion for those less fortunate.

Jerry is survived by her children, Laura Hansen Dean and husband, Dr. Timothy Ruff of Denver, Colorado, Linda and Rick Frary of Shelby, Ohio, Nancy Riordan of Michigan City, Indiana, and Michael and Susan Hansen of Atlanta, Georgia. She is also survived by sons-in-law, Michael Dean and David Riordan; her grandchildren that she adored are Allen Frary, Nathan Frary, Lydia (Randy Dennin) Frary, Katie (Martin) McGee, Kyle Riordan, Sean Hansen, Zachary Hansen, Joshua (Jamie) Ruff; great-grandchildren are Tannin Dennin, Damon Frary, Noah McGee, Emerson Ruff and a great grandchild to be born in 2015 to Katie and Martin McGee. She is also survived by her nieces, Catherine Campbell Goings and Susan Campbell Boudreau. She is also survived by her nursing school friends, Louise Matta, Elsie Bonner, and Margaret Kreiss.

Jerry was predeceased by her husband, Roy Edgerton Hansen; parents, Roland and Iva Bogart; grandmother, Katherine Mae (Lawmaster) Brewer; sister, Jane Lois (Bogart) Campbell, an infant brother and sister; and niece, Carrie Ann Campbell Laytart.

No visiting hours are planned. The family will hold a memorial service in the spring of 2015 at her gravesite in Toledo, Ohio and visit her beloved Lake Erie.
