Joanna Workman Obituary

Joanna MacMurtry Workman

THOMASVILLE, GA: Joanna MacMurtry Workman, 93, of Thomasville, GA, passed away on January 5, 2012 at her residence. She was born on the day World War One ended, November 11, 1918, in Beverly, Massachusetts, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth MacMurtry.

She was a long time resident of Massachusetts but her heart was in Maine where she was a summer resident of Pemaquid Trail in New Harbor for more than 35 years. She moved to Thomasville ten years ago to be closer to her family.

Joanna graduated from school in Beverly High School in 1936; graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine in 1941 and received her Master's Degree in education from Boston University in 1959. She taught 3rd and 4th grade for 26 years.

She made many friends while singing in the church choir and local choral societies when living in Maine, Massachusetts, Florida and Georgia.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Clark; a brother, John MacMurtry and an infant brother.

She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Linwood of Thomasville; sons, John (Ginnie Baker) of Bellville, Ohio, Phillip (Susan) of Thomasville; grandchildren, Panda and Tracy Workman of California (formerly of Mansfield), Heather (Parks) of Tallahassee, Holly (Jake) of Atlanta; and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Joanna will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her family, friends and former students.

Graveside services will be held at a later date in New Harbor, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Colby Fund, Colby College, 4345 Mayflower Hill, Waterville, Maine 04901 or to the Carpenter's Boat Shop, 440 Old Country Road, Pemaquid, ME 04558.

So sad to hear that Mrs. Workman has died. She was a wonderful teacher that we can never forget. I was the class of 1985 and we loved to get right to work in her 3rd grade class figuring out what we would make with those "holy scraps". She always had a nice piece of unique jewelry with sea glass or something shinny. She will be sadly missed!
