MANSFIELD: Stanley Sumergrad, 87, resident of the Alterra Sterling House, Mansfield, died July 19, 2010 at his home.
Stanley was born on November 9, 1922 in New York City, NY to Isidore and Frances Weissman Sumergrad. After high school he joined the U.S. Army for service in World War II, obtaining the rank of Corporal. Stanley then went to Kent State University obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.
Stanley worked many years for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, qualifying for Metropolitan's President's Conference regularly as a result of his high level of sales, service and leadership. He was also a member of the National Association of Life Underwriters and had served as Chairman and Instructor of the Life Training Council Classes. Later in Stanley's semi-retirement, along with his wife Esther, started E & S Insurance Company.
Stanley was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. He also formerly served on the Board of the Richland County Developmental and Learning Disability Center an was Past President of the Richland County MRDD. Both Stanley and Esther were instrumental in starting Richland New Hope Foundation. He volunteered over 2000 hours at Mansfield General Hospital where one of his favorite things to do was playing Santa for the children. Stanley was also a certified Master Gardener.
Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Susan F. Julius of New Orleans, LA; a son, Michael I. Sumergrad of Millersburg; cousins in New York, Beverly Caron and Muriel Rosenberg; sisters-in-law, Marianne Cappadonna and Josephine Contra, both of Mansfield and Johanna Cappadona of Centerville; many loving nieces and nephews and other relatives.
In addition to his parents; he was preceded in death by his wife, Esther in 2007; and his son, Mark Sumergrad in 1996.
Friends may call at Herlihy-Chambers Funeral Home, 173 Park Ave. West, on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mansfield Catholic Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Church, Richland County Mental Health Services or the
Alzheimer's Association Northwest Ohio Chapter.
