Christopher Clarke Obituary

Christopher John Clarke On August 17th, 2016, Christopher John Clarke made his final exit in the presence of his loving family and many friends. Chris was born in San Francisco on the 17th of September 1954, in an era when families of those with Down syndrome were counseled to institutionalize and forget their children. Instead, his parents John and Joyce raised Chris as the heart of the Clarke family. The first of five, Chris took great pride in being the eldest brother to Kevin (Rhonda Kutter), Leo (Betsy), Paul (Jane) and Amy (Larry Greer). He also cherished his role as uncle to Harrison, Elliott, John, Oliver, Theodore and Ruby. Chris was preceded in death by his mother Joyce. Chris lived an incredibly full life. He won many Olympic medals, wove beautiful table runners, and raised funds for the Human Race. He was also a famous ladies man, dancer and informal Elvis impersonator. Renowned as a toastmaster, he always began, "Hello, I'm Chris Clarke, I want to say from my heart" and he always meant it. Chris would no doubt raise a glass to his friends at the incomparable Cedars of Marin, and its associated Textile Art Center and Dante House. Recently, Chris developed Alzheimer's disease, and his family is grateful to those who helped him retain his identity and dignity. A celebration of Chris's extraordinary journey will be held on Sunday, September 25th at 1:00 p.m. at Fernwood Cemetery at 301 Tennessee Valley Rd., Mill Valley, with reception following. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to The Cedars of Marin, P. O. Box 947, Ross, CA 94957.

September 12, 2016

I remember first meeting Chris over 40 years ago. As a young adult he welcomed me to my first job at Cedars. I watched him grow and become a wonderful competent adult who brought joy to all who knew him. My condolences to his family and all who supported him over the years.
