Donald Regalia Obituary

Donald Lewis Regalia February 3, 1940 - May 25, 2020 Donald "Don" Regalia did something this Memorial Day, May 25, 2020, he never once did in his entire life; he threw in the towel. More precisely, it was his physical self which waved the flag of surrender, not his indomitable spirit, because, previously, Don Regalia never quit on anything; not on his wife, not his family, not his faith, not his many friends, not his beloved pets, not his career. Nothing, ever. His daughter Donya lovingly called him "her rock," and indeed, anyone who knew her father understood completely. Don was a big gentle bear of a man who finally succumbed to multiple illnesses as he slipped quietly and peacefully away to his new residence in heaven where his beloved wife of over 60 years, Sonnie, was there to meet him. It was a happy and blessed reunion. Behind him Don left a gaping void the size of the Grand Canyon, as his family and friends can attest. Donald Lewis Regalia was born on February 3, 1940 and grew up in San Anselmo, in Marin County, CA. He was the son of James and Caroline Regalia. He is survived by his two daughters, Donya Marie Regalia of Healdsburg, and Doreen Marianne Regalia of Santa Rosa. He is also survived by his sister Joanne Raines and brother-in-law Michael of Arvada, CO; and his niece, Dawn Hoople of Broomfield, CO; and his cousins Herman Scampini and wife Joanne of Novato, CA and Lois Scampini of San Carlos, CA. Don attended Marin Catholic High School where he was an all-star football player who then went on to play for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana. He soon thereafter married the former Sonya "Sonnie" Brown on June 28, 1959, and they remained happily married until her passing in April of 2018 from her 30-year battle with a progressively debilitating form of Multiple Sclerosis. It was during her long illness that Don showed his true character by standing firmly and protectively beside her, loyally and unwavering throughout, gaining the respect and admiration of all who knew him. After Notre Dame, Don returned to California where he landed a job as a liquor salesman for Trombetta Distributors and later became a salesman of legendary proportions for Southern Wines & Spirits in Rohnert Park, CA. It was during his 47 years in the liquor supply business that Don became so well known to countless bar and restaurant owners and their patrons. He also made hundreds of friends throughout Sonoma County, many of whom he still met with for their monthly lunches. Don loved his core friends until the day he passed and they truly loved him. His daughter Doreen said she is grateful for the memories and life lessons of her upbringing. Don was a firm patriarch but also fair and loving to his wife and daughters and a lifetime of great pets. As a family they camped and traveled and boated and snow skied and anyone who knew Don was aware his favorite three letters in the alphabet was "B-B-Q." He loved to hunt and fish and loved his sports, both as an active participant in his younger days and later watching his 49ers, Giants and Warriors on T.V. Don had his idiosyncrasies as well. It was common knowledge that he could own something for 20 years and it would still look like it just came out of the box, and he probably still had the box too. It wasn't frugality but his insistence that things be treated right and taken care of. Don was not a fan of the "disposables." He was way ahead of his time in that regard. As stated, Don never gave up on anything. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A Celebration of Life will be announced when the current health crisis permits such gatherings. Don Regalia loved a good party and there shall most certainly be a great one for him. Rest in Peace Big Fella.

Can't believe it's been five years since you left us. Seems like yesterday I was an 18 year old dating your sister-in-law and coming over to your and Sonnie's lovely home in Santa Rosa for BBQs, laughter and fund. So many Holidays spent with you as well. And wearing those USC colors while playing with my step brother Carl on his flag football team. Staying with you in your cabin up at Tahoe. Watching you show what true lover for a wife and family looks like. Listening to your stories of what it was like to grow up in Marin and Tahoe, and your stories at Marin Catholic and Notre Dame. And your stories in the liquor and wine distribution business. Plus meeting your siblings and parents. It's amazing how filled our lives are with amazing people who occupy so many moments, and then "poof" - disappear. But never from our hearts. Love you and miss you, Don.

Don was a co-worker with me in the 1970's during his career with Trombetta Distributors. Although we only knew each other at work I could see the care and passion he had for his family. He was always hardworking, positive and upbeat with his co-workers. He may have inherited this trait from his father Jim, who was also great to have in the office. I also remember his beautiful green Pontiac GTO. Gorgeous car.
My condolences to his family and all who will miss him.

Don Regalia was the quintessential quiet man. I don't think he ever missed one of our MCHS reunions. Photo below is Dick Tarrant, Colleen Cooper Bersaglieri and Don - 1997 Deer Park Villa. Don was a good man .. it was always a pleasure to see him to catch up. We were always going to get together for a bbq but life just got in the way. May he rejoice in heaven with his beloved Sonnie and all of our other classmates. Rest in peace Don. You were well loved.

Don and my wife Mary Oliva Mariani were all members of the Marin Catholic Class of 1957. His wife Sonnie was a class behind us. We have so many fond memories of our high school years and the fun that we had together. And even later as we were busy working and raising our own families, when we had a chance to be together it was like we had just hung out with each other during the previous week. Don was so many things, but most of all he was probably Gods model for just a really nice guy. He was funny, kind, hard working, and most of all dedicated to Sonnie and all of his family. I am sure that they are both enjoying each other again with the spirits of their youth and without all of the problems of mortal bodies to slow them down. One of MCs great couples are together again!

I too grew up in San Anselmo where I came to know Don and his Family. We were also friends in High School where I dubbed him ''one of the good guys''. He always chuckled over that. The thing I remember most, through all the years and all the Reunions, was his genuine interest in the rest of us. If he asked how we were then he truly wanted an answer. That trait always reflected to his genuineness and his appreciation of his classmates and his time with us. I never once heard a boastful remark or a focus on himself. He did love Sonnie and ''the girls''. Knowing just how much must bring them some comfort and great Memories now. It was a pleasure to have attended school with someone like Don. May his Eternal Reward be great.

Don was my brother in law, whom I first met when he was about to celebrate his 30th birthday. I loved visiting his home; he and Sonnie home was always clean, inviting, ordered and filled with music and laughter. Donya and Doreen was just little girls then, and they loved to be swung around in circles. Later we played flag football on teams with my step brother. He hadn't lost his love of the game. He had lots of boy toys - Dune Buggies and camping gear, and as Audi wrote in his Obit, they always looked brand new. He had a HUGE heart, loved to laugh, and cared for the people around him even more than the things he acquired. Can't imagine a world without him in it.
