EDWARD CHAVEZ Obituary

Edward J Chavez May 14, 1929 - Sep. 10, 2013 Eddie Chavez, a well-known coach who was loved by many and embodied all the best of human virtues passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at his home in Ross, where he and his wife Eileen raised their 6 sons. Born in Panama in 1929, Eddie moved to Vallejo, Ca., in 1938. He graduated from St. Vincents HS, and attended the University of Santa Clara on a football, basketball and baseball scholarship. After college, Eddie was recruited by the New York Yankees, but had to complete a 2 year commitment with the US Army. After the Army he studied teaching and coaching at San Francisco State where he met Eileen Barron, his wife. They have been married for 58 years. Ed began his teaching and coaching career at St Mary's HS. In 1959, Ed accepted a position with Tam High in Mill Valley, and they moved to Ross. Ed retired from Tam in 1987, but continued to coach tennis at Branson HS, and privately with his wife Eileen. And, somewhere in between the years, somewhere along the way, you came into his life. On the playgrounds, the teams, the fields, the classroom, the courts, and neighborhoods, you, all of you, came into our lives. We are where we live, and who we meet, where we play; we are of our friends and those whom we love. And Dad, Eddie, Pop, Coach, Grandpa, Uncle loved everybody, and therefore he is as much a part of you as you are of him. And so yes, he is gone, but the soul of the man lives on. Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Gilda Chavez; brothers Tony, George, and sister Vilma. Ed is survived by his wife Eileen of 58 years, their 6 sons, Eddie Joe, Greg, Pat (Carol) Buck (Susan), Terry and Chris (Christine), 16 grandchildren: Simone, Eddie James, Maddie, Nolan, Derek, Ryan, Neal, Lucas, Skylar, Nicole, Gracie, Barron, Patrick, Greyson, Joe-Henry and Ava. Eddie is also survived by brothers William (Patricia), Charles (Diana), and sisters Norma White (Bob), and Debra Sordello (Jim), sister and brother-in-laws Phyllis Chavez and Ed Landaker and numerous nieces and nephews. The family greatly appreciates the support of Hospice of the Bay. There will be a rosary Friday Sept 20, at 7:30 P.M. and a funeral on Saturday September 21, at 11:30 A.M. at Saint Anselms Church on Shady Lane in Ross. The reception will follow at St. Anselms Elementary school gym.

When I think of Ed: a great teacher, in the classroom and on the court; a sense of humor; patience; one of the first to welcome me to Tam; an institution at Tam HS; simply unforgettable.

Dear Eileen and family: I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Eddie. So many, many years ago, we used to enjoy watching the Redwood High basketball games and going after to Ricardo's for dinner. Those were good times!! Louise joins me in sending our love and prayers to you at this difficult time. God Bless, Ralph Cicurel

coach was always the bright light. he glowed
with passion and love for life. on the court,
in the halls and offices of tam, in the locker room at half time, chasing eddie joe around the bleachers in the gym, sternly explaining the play one more time, dancing with eileen, he glowed, and we all knew we were in great hands.
thanks coach,

Mr. Chavez, you were and always will be part of my memories of my days at Santa Clara University.
After I became friends with EJ is when I met Ed. He made me feel welcomed at his home. He accepted me with my eccentricities with a smile and a slight laugh while shaking his head.
He will truly be missed, but always alive with the fond memories I have of him and the many adventures over the years with his family.

Eileen, Eddie Joe, Greg, Bucky, Patrick, Terry and Chris, Thank you for being an important part of my life. You always made me feel a part of your extended family both at your home and when we all helped keep Saturday mornings interesting for so many in your dad's program for kids at Tam High. Your dad was my mentor, my friend, and my role model for what family and love could be. He was a treasure, as are each of you.

Ed Chavez truly transcended. He was a brilliant coach, a loving husband and father, a good neighbor, a talented teacher. But ... he was more than that. He showed us how to value others, create community and embrace the joy of life. He was a special person and will truly be missed.

September 20, 2013

Dear Chavez Family, I am sorry for your loss. Ed was a great human being and we knew him as a gifted coach. He taught tennis to two of my son's, Matt and Tom, and in the process he imparted his life wisdom. The combination was unbeatable. Thanks Ed.
With deepest sympathy.

I was sad to read that Ed has died. My thoughts are with the Chavez family . Ed played a major role in my early life. He coached me in ‘67 at St Anselm's and I worked for him in ‘68 and ‘69 at Tam High School as a lifeguard and swim teacher. One of the best coaches I ever had because Ed was truly a thinker and he always had great strategy along with motivating his players. As a boss , Ed was always in a good mood. The world is a better place because of him.

My deepest condolences to all the Chavez family members. Mr. Chavez was the first teacher I ran across in my freshman year @ Tam High. I was lost & so frightful being my first year in high school, & he saw that & guided me with his beautiful green eyes. I will never forget him. He was one in a million! Who would have known that when I moved the following year to San Anselmo & went to Drake that I would cross the path of his friendly son Eddie Joe who treated me with nothing but kindness as a new student.
You will always have an imprint in my heart Mr. Chavez. Rest in peace my friend....

Mr Chavez was among those teachers at Tam who lives on in all our memories as a man who was funny but tough and stood out as we were trying to figure out who we were. We all liked him. He was in that group of whispered names like Mr. Marshall, and Mr. Gustafson, Mr Bell and actually several others. He did make a difference.

Tom and I send our condolences to the entire Chavez family. Mr. Chavez was the perfect example of a loving father, husband, teacher/coach and all who he touched with his kindness will never forget him. Hoping the joy of your memories and others words brings you all much comfort.

I am among the many grads of Tam who learned how to type from Ed Chavez. He was funny clowning around with Conrad Hoetger in class. BUT he encouraged you and made such an impact. I know Ed would be proud of me as I type quite efficiently with fast speed. Such a wonderful human being and a great loss to all his students and family.

September 15, 2013

Mr. Chavez was a truly life changing teacher. I had him for History and Civics. The things he taught us still help inform my ideas and way of working in the world. He treated each student as an individual. Cheers to you Mr. Chavez.

To the Chavez clan,

Please accept my condolences on your loss of a truly great man. One of my fondest memories was how our two families filled several pews in church.
