Edward Schulman Obituary

Edward R. Schulman 1921 - 2012 San Rafael, 91. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully at his home from natural causes last Monday December 31, 2012. Edward was born in San Francisco in 1921 and graduated in 1939 from George Washington High School. Upon his graduation, he served in the Army Air Corps as a B-17 aviator and flew sixty missions abroad during WWII earning US decorations. After his enlistment, Edward received a Bachelor's degree from St. Mary's College where he also played football, and a Masters in Education from the University of San Francisco. He retired after thirty years of working for the San Francisco Unified School District where he helped lead racial integration in the 1960's, first as a teacher and school principal, before then going on to become Director of Personnel for grades K - 6. He was pre-deceased in life by two sisters, Viola Winter and Mary-Jane Davis, one daughter, Susan Schulman, and his former wife, Jacquie Schulman. He is survived by his wife Judy Sockolov Schulman of San Rafael, four sons and two daughters-in-law: Donn Schulman, Sr. of Phoenix, Rand and Carey Schulman of San Diego, Ladd and Debra Schulman of San Rafael, Dean Scott Schulman of Los Angeles, six grandchildren: Donn Schulman Jr., Shaun Schulman, Dax Schulman, Nick Schulman and his wife Courtney, Lauren Ross Schulman, Kyle Ross Schulman, two great-granddaughters: Kelsey and Taylor Schulman, three step-children and their spouses: Brad and Sonda Sockolov of San Rafael and their son Daniel Sockolov, Rod and Jo-Ann Sockolov of Atherton and their daughters Caitlin and Kelly Sockolov, Vicki and Ernie Astorga of Petaluma and her son Nikolas Yonkers. Many will also remember Edward from the years he taught dancing in Marin County with the "Schulman Cotillion" and for the several summers he guided students through European countries with the Foreign Study League. In his free time, he was an avid Bridge player and enjoyed many years of a tennis membership with the The Marin Golf and Country Club. Most of all, he will be remembered by his family and friends for his exceptional kindness, warmth, and humanity that touched all who knew him. Donations in Edward's memory may be sent to the American Parkinson Foundation or Hospice By the Bay.

Hal and I so loved Ed as a dear friend. Hal has many fond memories of parties, vacations, dancing lessons, tennis challenges and the "two-martini steak bar-b-ques."
Shirlee remembers a wonderful 'human' who always had time to talk, listen and send a few jokes her way.
We go back to all of the eras and totally enjoyed Ed's presence.
We thought we knew a lot about Ed until we read the very eloquent words and deeds written by those that knew him, so closely.
Mahalo for more insight into the gentleman 'extraordinaire,' our beloved friend, Ed.
Lovingly, and with the utmost 'aloha,'
Shirlee and Hal Newman

To the Shulman Family, I'm so very sorry to hear of Mr. Shulman's passing. So many fond memories of fun times, musical theater-wise and otherwise, at his home while I was growing up. My condolences to all.

Not only did I know Ed as a friend of the Mannheimer family, into which I married, (he attended my wedding to Dick Mannheimer, Jr. in 1988) but I also experienced his dance classes well before I met the Mannheimers. I must have been in 6th or 7th grade (early-1970s) when my Aunt Ann Mahony took me and my cousins to dance classes conducted by Ed and Jacquie. It's no wonder I love to dance to this very day!!! Thank you for your warmness and great humor, Ed. You will be missed, but please know you touched many lives in a very positive way! Sincerely, Eileen Reynolds Mannheimer

Dear Schulman Family,
We are sorry for your loss. Bud was a good childhood friend of my mother, Mary Edna Belluomini. She had fond memories of them growing up together on Arguello Blvd. You are in our thoughts.

Ed was a favorite tennis partner of mine. What a wicked back hand he used to crush our opponents! OK, not always, but his wonderful sense of humor made tennis doubles at Marin Country Club great fun. He will be missed.
