Gerald Moyer Obituary

Gerald Moyer
April 14, 1939 - May 23, 2022
Eugene, Oregon
Gerald Alan Moyer, a man who will be remembered by his family and friends for his strong faith, his love for his three children, his professionalism in business, and for consistently demonstrating how to live a life of love for others, died May 23rd in Eugene, Oregon. He was 83.
Mr. Moyer was a longtime resident of Marin County, California, where he raised his family and operated a home remodeling business. A 1965 graduate of Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, Mr. Moyer loved to sing, lending his beautiful baritone voice to choirs at Linfield and at churches he attended. He was a strong man – strong in faith and strong physically as the result of his demanding profession. His children remember he was always building, both in terms of remodeling and in terms of building up and supporting those around him, demonstrating, perhaps without knowing it, a father's love for his children as a model for the love Jesus has for every one of us, with no conditions. His love was consistent, generous, and unfailing. Grace, patience, and humor – sometimes twinkle-in-the-eye mischievous humor -- were among the qualities that distinguished Mr. Moyer.
He enthusiastically attended his children's and later his grandchildren's school activities and games. One of his children put it succinctly – "he made sure we all had what we needed; he loved us so well, our rock through it all." Mr. Moyer was gracious and generous to others, as well. What truly made him happy, another of his children remembered, was helping – helping his family and helping others by volunteering through his church, donating blood, and other charitable activities. He traveled to Mexico 17 times with the church youth group as an adult leader, working on a variety of projects to aid communities there. But caring for his family was his particular joy. Once he drove hundreds of miles to have a two-person Thanksgiving dinner with a daughter who had moved away to attend college and was lonely. Spending Thanksgiving together this way became an annual tradition. Mr. Moyer also made time to attend his children's and grandchildren's graduations and other important life events.
Mr. Moyer was born April 14, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan, to Gerald Staples Moyer and Loie Viola Giddings Moyer. Over time he lived in Denver, Kansas City, Phoenix, Arizona, and Arcadia, San Lorenzo, Corte Madera, and Mill Valley, California.
Professionally, Mr. Moyer was a partner in Warren Holmes Associates, a construction firm in Marin County, and also operated his own construction and remodeling business, Gerald A. Moyer Construction in Mill Valley.
He attended the College of Marin and graduated from Linfield College with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He served several years in the Air Force Reserves around this time. At Linfield he was a member of Delta Psi Delta fraternity and the Acapella Choir. He married Linda Ohrling in 1966 and they had had three children: Neil Moyer (Laurie) and Julie Kennedy, both of Eugene, and Kathy Jeter (Rich), of Rohnert Park, California. He married Sally Young in 1988. Other survivors include two brothers, David Eugene Moyer of Indian Wells, California, Richard Alden Moyer of Eugene, a niece, Rebecca Clark of Los Angeles, California, and 10 grandchildren.
Two memorial services are planned: 11 a.m. June 18 at the Marin Covenant Church in San Rafael, California, and 3 p.m. July 10 at Eugene Faith Center, Eugene, Oregon.

My wife Micky and I send our heartfelt condolences to Gerry´s extended family. I met Gerry, David, and Rick maybe about 1954. His dad, Pastor Moyer, had just begun his ministry at our church, the former First Baptist Church of Corte Madera CA. I think Gerry was in the tenth grade then, David and I in the eighth, and Ricky in the sixth. My school was in a different district. But we spent a lot of time together - we were the four kids in our church youth group. Great times. Years later, Gerry began working for my dad doing luxury home remodels in Marin, and some years after that, as my father aged, Gerry continued to work with my dad making it possible for the two of them to take on jobs that required more than two hands. So, really, Gerry made it possible for my dad to keep working. I will always be grateful for the friendship Gerry and my dad shared. We moved to San Luis Obispo, and we lost touch with one another. We´ve mailed a check today to Linfield University Music Department A Capella Choir in Gerry´s memory. I know he loved to sing. He´s singing with the angels now. God bless you all.
