Gertrude Wasserman Obituary

Gertrude Wasserman Died on the morning of August 15, 2009, six weeks shy of her 95th birthday. She was born in New York City on Sept. 27, 1914. Preceded in death by her sister Hennie, she is survived by her sister May, daughters Betsy and husband Izzy, Carol and husband Bill, granddaughter, Kamala and husband Scott, grandson Shale and wife Courtney, grandchildren Jennifer, Samantha, Danielle and Jesse, and former son-in-law Paul and wife Dana, as well as niece Allison, husband Tom, nephew Gerry, and wife Clare. Also survived by countless friends and acquaintances who loved her. Gertrude met the love of her life, Abe Wasserman, when she was 14 years old. They were married on December 22, 1934 and had a love affair for the next 64 years until Abe's death. Gertrude won a (New York) citywide poster contest at her elementary school. She did not paint again until her 80's, when her first painting won a San Francisco senior art contest. Gertrude performed many services for the Jewish community. She wrote, directed and produced plays (as well as made costumes and designed sets) that were performed at the S.F Jewish Community Center. In 1993, she won the Jewish Federation's (National) Volunteer of the Year Award. She was most proud of her work as president of the Montefiore Couples Club as well as Special Events and Project Coordinator. She planned trips, selected speakers, and organized a conference at the Moscone Center for Jewish Seniors. She loved to write poetry for the significant events of her loved ones' lives and she recently completed her autobiography. Gertrude was a pioneer in the 1950's as the first woman designer and account executive in the packaging industry. She worked in the industry for 15 years. She touched all who came into contact with her. She was in love with life and in love with people. Her greatest joy was in helping others. We were lucky to have had her as long as we did, and we miss her already. A Service will be held at Sinai Memorial Chapel, Geary and Divisadero, 1:00 PM, Wednesday, August 19, 2009.
