James Aiken Hurst Jr.

1930 - 2021

James Aiken Hurst, Jr. July 25, 1930 - May 26, 2021 Jim was born and raised in San Francisco and after serving in the Korean War he returned to the city and followed his father into commercial real estate, where Jim enjoyed a long and successful career, contributing in his own small way to the ever-changing skyline of his home town. Jim married, and he and his devoted wife, Lynne, moved to Kentfield in Marin County, where they raised their son James, who was lucky to have them both as parents. An outdoorsman who loved fishing and game bird hunting throughout the lakes, rivers, marshes, and fields of Northern California, Jim most of all loved the camaraderie he shared with his fellow hunters and fisherman. Sailing was his greatest passion and Jim was an excellent and accomplished yachtsman. A member of the Cruising Club of America for over 50 years, and a former member of the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco and the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon; he completed multiple Trans-Atlantic crossings, voyages to Hawaii and Alaska, fun-filled trips up the Delta to Tinsley Island, (there was a harrowing adventure aboard a burning boat sinking into hammerhead shark-filled waters in the Sea of Cortez), and he commissioned a wooden racing yacht, custom built to his own specifications in Denmark, with which he competed in numerous regattas on the Bay, and was proud to have won many of them. Jim and Lynne were lovingly married for 48 years and he remained in Marin after her passing, continuing to enjoy morning coffee with friends, the fellowship of his weekly meetings of the Marvelous Marin Breakfast Club, and he rarely turned down an invitation to lunch or dinner. Jim considered himself to be very fortunate for the many wonderful colleagues, neighbors, and friends he had throughout the years, and he was grateful for you all.
