John Butler Obituary

John Kenneth Butler Age, 66, of Novato passed away on the afternoon of Wednesday, November, 5, 2014 in Sonoma, California with his daughter at his side. John was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer on September 29, 2014. He was born on June 21, 1948 in New York, New York to Dorothea and Arthur Butler of Montclaire, New Jersey. He grew up in New Jersey and Massachusetts, with the family spending many summers in Cape Cod. John graduated from Montclaire High School in 1966. He attended the University of Ohio where he studied math and physics. He joined the U.S. Army and graduated with honors from the U.S. Army Signaling School in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey in 1972. He was stationed in the Middle East where he worked as an electronics and communication specialist. After his honorable discharge in 1977, he moved to California to be closer to family and start a new civilian life. For the next 25 years he worked as an electrical and maintenance engineer until his early retirement in 2003. He continued to work part-time in his retirement maintaining group homes for special needs individuals and assisted in management of properties neighboring his home until his diagnosis was made. John was married to Emily Patterson in 1984. They had their daughter Ashley in 1985. John became a Grand Dad in July of this year. John was a proud, dedicated and loving Dad and Grand Dad. Also known by his call sign KF6GNI, John was an amateur ham radio operator. He was an emergency communications volunteer for RACES. He was a talented musician. He adored his golden retrievers. Among many other positive attributes, John was brilliant, but humble. He was extremely generous and self-sacrificing. Above all, he was always there-to listen, give advice, to help. His mind and soul will be dearly missed, but his spirit will stay with those that he loved and cared for. John is survived by his daughter Ashley, son-in-law Cody, grandson Caiden John, the Patterson Clan, brother Art, sister-in-law Joyce along with nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, and cousins. His voice will be missed on the radio waves and his physical presence absent on Second Street. Was in Novato yesterday and It hit me this is where my old neighbor from NJ kived. It made me smile yet sad that finally here I was in California and wished he was still with us. I am so glad we connected and could share what transpired in our lives over the years. You are missed!

Dear Ashley, I wrote something back in November 2014 about your dad and his love for his family his friends and his neighbors. Everything I wrote about him stands Exactly the same today. I think about him all the time when Im at the building, and all he did for me. All I have to do is come across an electrical outlet that he marked to make it easy for me to identify which circuit breaker it went to and I smile. Five years and he still greatly missed and always will be. Im sure he looks down on you and your family with great love and pride. Now he even has a new granddaughter as well. All the best to you and your family with the fondest of thoughts for your father. Love rich elb and Suzanne

Dear Ashley and Family...I just learned of your dad's passing today after discovering his phone had been disconnected. This led me to check for him by call sign and in turn to discover that he has left us. Although I did not know him as well as many, I took an instant shining to him and very much appreciated his can-do attitude. After reading the well written and loving obit (in the IJ) and seeing other peoples' remembrances of him, I regret not having spent more time getting to know him. I hope you will be able to keep your memories of him close to your hearts and carry his goodness forward.

I had the privilege of knowing John for almost 30 years. He was a great friend, fellow employee, and mentor. The ham radio community will never be the same without him. My deepest sympathy to Ashley and family. Rest in peace my friend.

Dear Ashley and family,
I knew John as a warm and friendly guy with a great sense of humor. John was always, always willing to help out his friends and neighbors and He never asked for anything in return. John just liked helping people out. If you needed a tool or a part he had it. If he could fix it for you, and he usually could, he would and with a smile.
John helped me out with the apartments across from his home, and would bring things over for the children in the building. He even made them a small picnic table so they had a place to draw and play games under a big shade tree.
John was like a mother hen to his neighbors, always scrubbing off grafettie, looking out for others property, and especially recycle, yard waste, and garbage patrol. John would run "patrol" on his neighbors blue, green and grey cans with a vengeance. One of his mottos I always found amusing was "never let any of these containers get picked up with any air in them". Translation, make sure their full!!!
Of course, the most important people in John's life were his daughter Ashley, her husband Cody, and his grandson Caiden. He spoke of them often, with a smile on his face, and with great love in his heart.
John will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
