Kenneth Elkington Obituary

Kenneth Albert Elkington 10/9/28 3/28/16 Ken passed away peacefully in his Sausalito home of 58 years with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley Jo, his children, Claire deAndrade (David), Christopher (Anne), and Robert Scott (Linda Munoz), grandchildren Daniel (Julia), Michael (Adriana), Jessica (Rhys Sanders), Lindsey, and Kenneth Elkington, Ben and Dira deAndrade, Zachary and Sara Johnson and five great-grandchildren, who Ken like to refer to as "the greats". Ken was born in San Francisco, as the middle son of George and Josephine (pre-deceased along with brothers, George and Robert). Ken grew up on the same street as his future wife, Shirley Jo (nee Newton). He attended Washington H.S. and then joined the U.S Army and served during the Korean War. He returned from the Army and joined his father and brother in the family construction business, G.J. Elkington & Sons and married Shirley. With Shirley he designed and built their first and last home, where they raised their children and eventually started his own company with his own sons. Ken was an active member in the Sausalito Rotary Club, serving as President in 1970-1971, where he volunteered his extensive contracting skills for the first Rotary Senior Housing Project (Bee Street). No task was too big or small having participated in the annual Rotary parking fund-raiser at the Sausalito Art Festival; building Gabrielson Park; a hand-crafted bar at Sausalito Woman's Club, various bus shelters; as well as many other community projects. He also volunteered his excellent wood-working skills for the many construction and remodeling projects led by his sons, Chris and Scott and grandson, Daniel. A memorial service honoring Ken's life will be held on May 21, 2016. Please inquire and RSVP at [email protected] or 415-326-8216. Donations can be made in Ken's name to the Sausalito Rotary Housing Corporation.
