Liza Cozad-Lauser Obituary

Liza Marie Elizabeth Cozad-Lauser Age 47, formerly of Rock Island, IL., passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 4th, 2015. After twenty months of courageously battling an inoperable brain tumor, her generous spirit, infectious positivity and indomitable strength continue to inspire her family, friends, and the thousands of people she touched in her life. A private ceremony is planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Girls, Inc. at www.girlsinc.org. As an athlete, entrepreneur, wife, mother, and friend, Liza Marie was the definition of an overachiever. Born in Rock Island to Bud and Carole Ann Cozad, her lifelong passion for tennis began shortly after she learned to walk. She won numerous awards in her collegiate and semi-professional tennis career, and in 2010, was ranked #1 in Northern California for women over 40. She was also an accomplished marathon runner, even attempting an Iron Man. Liza graduated from University of Redlands, California with dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in psychology and philosophy, and received her law degree from DePaul University. She loved to drive fast and take chances; who else but Liza would teach herself how to ride a motorcycle by taking a solo road tripacross the United Statesin one week!? In 1997 she met her best friend and soul mate, David Lauser. They married in 2002 and continued to deepen their love and devotion for 18 years. She is survived by the wonderful family they cultivated together. Liza doted and took pride in caring for her step-daughter, Ella Danielle Marie Lauser. She was also a dedicated mama to their beloved puppy dogs: Gretchen, Max and Oskar. Liza was a spunky and fun-loving cousin and niece to the large Cozad clan. Liza was a loving aunt to Keith and Elliot-Sloane Cozad of her brother Jim and wife, Ginger Cozad. Liza also adored her brother John Cozad, his partner Mindy Green, and her son Cameron. Never one to present a problem without a solution, Liza was a born entrepreneur and excelled in numerous fields; from law, to business management, to technology, she effortlessly managed to juggle (at least) two careers at the same time. At 41, she retired from her role as a senior attorney for Fireman's Fund Insurance to focus on matters close to her heart: giving back to her community. Liza's charitable work included Meals on Wheels, Marin County Senior Helpers, volunteer tennis coaching, and participating in exhibitions such as the annual E-surance tennis fundraiser. For most people, that schedule would feel like a full plate, but for Liza Marie, it was just breakfast. She also owned two Curves gym franchises in Novato and Mill Valley, where she was loved as an employer and advocate for fitness and grew HomeWell Senior Care North Bay into a company that received national recognition for helping seniors remain independent while receiving exceptional care. If a caregiver called in sick, Liza was frequently up at 4am personally attending to the needs of her clients and their families. Yes, she was a dynamo of energy and purpose, but Liza still found plenty of time to revel in a rich home life. Reading the Wall Street Journal, making her famous "Liza Chicken" and watching Family Feud, Golden Girls, Star Trek and documentaries were favorite past times. She had a 146 IQ and was a member of MENSA, which she never let her husband forget. In the last year, Liza moved to Palm Desert with her husband to be closer to her stepdaughter and enjoy life. She bravely fought the FDA and united people in the belief that anything is possible. We love you Liza, the tumor is gone and you are healed. All things must pass, as your beloved George Harrison sings, however, your light shines on.

I will miss you Liza. It has been hard to come on to this page and write but I know that you are at peace now and it is time for me to allow my memories to be those that have always been happy ones and not connect them to the pain of losing you to us in this lifetime. Your battle was an inspriation to many and you are and always will be my hero. For all that you did for me in our friendship together, though brief as it was and the time I have seen you had been long, I will always be grateful that I am able to say "yes, she was a friend. A truly amazing, inspiring and beautiful friend". I am one who can take the memories of my friendship with you and carry them with me always. Thank you for showing all of us how truly amazing life is and how truly amazing you are. Oh, and by the way if you see Davey Jones up there can you remind him that he never called me like he told your brother he was going to do. Thanks ;-) You will be missed. With all the love in my heart, I will not say goodbye, but see you in time. My condolances and love to David and all of Liza's family and close friends.

January 26, 2015

Wow, what a wonderful soul Liza is! I am inspired by reading her obituary! David , you and all of her family are so lucky to have had the privilege of having her in your lives.
I almost am unsure as to write this: but will- in October of 2014 you and the Wabo's were playing at Winstar Casino in Oklahoma. I got on the shuttle and saw you! I gave you a huge hug and will never forget your comment-"what is this, a milk truck-I have a doctors appointment to get to".
That was before I new the sad truth, and now it makes sense and proves how very much you Love Liza. I sincerely hope you God is bringing you and yours Peace every day. I know how hard thinking oh, it has been 22 days since she passed.
She is the lucky one, not us left here on earth to grieve. Know that she is healthy and happy and still surrounding you and her loved ones with comfort. Just be still, and look and listen and watch for her messages from Above! love you and have for so many years, Lisa Baugher ([email protected])

To my college friend and motorcycle riding partner. I hope they have a Ninja up in heaven for you. You were one off the first persons I met at the UofR and I enjoyed your friendship as a transfer into the school my sophomore year. You are a reminder of how fleeting life can be, and we should all cherish every day we have here with our friends and family. I'll miss you! -- Love Arley

I was a member of the Mill Valley Curves where I met Liza. Bright Bubbly Sweet Loving and caring woman who could light up any room with her smile and gave the best hugs. We never know what God has in store and we are never ready to lose someone we love. Liza is up in heaven with all her loved ones shaking things up as she did on earth. My only consolation is she is now FREE from pain.
Much Love, Peace and Joy.

I adored Liza from the first time I met her when she was a substitute at the BNI group I belonged to. How could you not? Her warm, open, funny personality drew you into her orbit and you never wanted to leave. I found out she was ill when I contacted HomeWell to arrange care for my mother when she moved in with me after having a stroke. It never occurred to me to call anyone else. Even not knowing her well, I was devastated by her diagnosis and have been praying for her ever since. I am so very, very sorry for your loss. I am also smiling, imagining her beautiful spirit free from pain and the restraints of her physical body. May God bless you and bring you peace in this difficult time.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Liza, nor the pleasure of meeting you David, or being able to hear you play live in a concert with the Wabos, but as a fellow drummer, I love what you do Dave, therefore I love you, and as Liza was your wife, I know you loved her because of who she was, which made her a lovable person. Therefore, I loved her, though never having met her, and you have my deepest heartfelt sympathies for your loss. I pray the coming days will grant you peace during your grief and I hope that you will find closure, and the hurt will subside, though the memories of Liza never will... My love sent your way David, I Love you "Bro"!

A true and honest friend, a free spirit, a smart cookie, an animal lover, and a passionate soul. I am blessed to have had Liza be part of my life for 25 years. There is a hole in my heart that will never be quite filled - but I am so happy that her tumor no longer tethers her spirit. Love you, sweet friend.

As the owner of Curves in Mill Valley, Liza created a lively and fun atmosphere for fitness. My cartoon on the Curves chalkboard shows her in tennis whites. At a time when she was both losing her Curves location AND getting her cancer diagnosis, she offered to transport this huge board to my art studio. I am very grateful for having known Liza.
