Norbert M. "Mike" Murray Jr.

Norbert M. "Mike" Murray Jr. January 26, 1908 ~ May 12, 2006 Quietly passed away in Greenbrae with his children at his side at the age of 98. The son of Norbert and Ella Murray, Mike was raised in San Marino with two brothers, Jake and Scott. Active in sports he won the California Junior Golf Championship at the age of twelve. He attended The Hun School of Princeton and Lawrenceville School in New Jersey before entering the University of California from where he graduated in 1932. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity and rowed on the Cal crew team. In the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics he was the Olympic rowing boathouse manager rooting his former teammates to a Gold Medal. Mike was commissioned in the U.S. Navy prior to World War II serving aboard the USS William Ward Burroughs (AP-3) in several significant battles in the Pacific Theater. After the war he moved his family to San Anselmo where he and his wife Molly raised three children. He was active in the community serving as a City Councilman and participating with several local civic organizations. Molly died in 1975 and Mike married Betty Cordingly deCarle in 1977. They lived in Rutherford in Napa Valley until moving to The Tamalpais in Greenbrae in 1991. They enjoyed traveling until Betty passed away in 1999. Mike is survived by three children, Norb, William and Pam, stepdaughter Diantha deCarle, four grandchildren Christa, Julia, Andrea and Michael, and four great grandchildren. No services will be held. The Grave Site will be at the San Gabriel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Hospice of Marin.
