William Timmer Obituary

William A. Timmer William A. Timmer, long time resident of Marin County, passed away peacefully, with family by his side, in his Novato home at the age of 88. Bill was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on May 18th, 1918. He spent his childhood years in Grand Rapids and was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1943 during WWII. He was stationed in Guam and after the war returned to Grand Rapids to complete his education. While stationed in San Diego, William experienced the beauty of California. He vowed to return and did so in 1947. With wife Janice and two children, Bill went to school in San Francisco to study Podiatry. He opened his practice in San Rafael and sold real estate part time. By 1958, William's family had grown to six children and he was selling real estate full time. He opened William A. Timmer Realty in 1954 and sold homes to appreciative clients for many years. In 1968, Bill cut back on his real estate brokerage, sold his business, partnered with Reuben Kaehler, and formed Kaehler/Timmer Development Co. He and Reuben built many fine homes in Novato. The company was very active in the community, helping Rotary build the first low income housing for senior citizens and building several houses for organizations to raise money. Bill enjoyed many outdoor sports especially golf, skiing, boating, hunting and fishing. He spent many days playing golf at the Meadow Club and Marin Golf and Country Club. He loved to be on the water, whether it be out in the bay catching striped bass or at Lake Berryessa catching bluegill. After meeting Rita Marrett in 1971 they were married in 1977. They spent many good times together, always involving family and friends. They were long time members of the Marin Golf and Country Club, spending many days chasing golf balls down the fairways and participating in club activities. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Rita, sons William A. Timmer, Jr. and wife Jackie, David C. Timmer and wife Elmira, Richard C. Timmer and wife Nansi, Scott M. Timmer and wife Laura, stepsons Douglas A. Timmer, Daniel Marrett and wife Glenda, and stepdaughter Lisa Vandergriff and husband Jerry, plus many grand and great grand children. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial remembrance and reception for friends and family will be held on Saturday, April 7th at 11:30 a.m. at Marin Golf and Country Club, Novato. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice by the Bay, 17 East Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Larkspur, CA 94939, or the National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 N.W. 9th Ave./Bob Hope Rd., Miami, FL 33136-1494.

We send our sincere condolences to Rita and family on their loss. Bill and Rueben built our first California home, and later on we shared time with Bill at Marin Country Club. We will miss him.

Rita,
We were sorry to hear of Bill's passing. Jim and I had dinner with Bob & Marilyn Carson on Monday evening, at which time we were talking about you and Bill, which made it even sadder to read this sad news today. Please accept our condolences.

Bill and Reuben as partners truly made tremendous contributions to our beloved town of Novato. It will be difficult to replace them.

Rita and Family: Judy and I came to know Bill through his partnership with Reuben Kaehler. We dreamed of owning a Kaehler-Timmer home and followed their developments throughout Novato, finally purchasing a Kaehler-Timmer home on Sutro Avenue in West Novato. We lived there for many years until downsizing into a condo, then when Judy passed away, I moved to Oregon to be near my son and his family. Bill was a good friend, and will be missed terribly.
