Joseph Parsons/Kahney Obituary

Joseph "Gene" Eugene Parsons/Kahney

May 7, 1939 - September 2, 2025

Joseph Eugene "Gene" Parsons/Kahney, 86, of Bassett, Va. passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Born on May 7, 1939, in Baltimore, Md., Gene was the son of Florence B. Parsons/Kahney (Mother) and Thomas L. Kahney, both predeceased.

He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Joan Helen Staeger/Kahney; son, Joseph Lucien Kahney of Bassett; granddaughter, Elizabeth Willa Kahney, of Germany; granddaughter, Gabrielle Katherine; and son-in-law, Mario Zelaya of Pennsylvania. Gene was also the eldest of seven children and survived by Patricia and (predeceased) Rev. William J. Kendrick of Alabama, Thomas and Brenda Kahney of Illinois, Larry and Beatrice Kahney of Indiana, Kenneth and Connie Kahney of North Carolina, Jacqueline and Steve Bramer of South Carolina, and Susan and Carl Wells of North Carolina, along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Gene was also predeceased by Ruth Elizabeth Parsons (Grandmom Parsons), who he often spoke very fondly of.

Gene was a Veteran of the United States Navy and retired from the Maryland State Highway Administration after providing 35 years of service. He spent a good portion of his life living in Maryland, specifically Manchester, Maryland before retiring and moving to Bassett, Va. with his wife to enjoy retirement. He was an amazing mechanic by trade, avid fisherman, and truly enjoyed his Model A Ford pickup/Street rod named "Puddle-Jumper", which he essentially built from the ground up on his own. Gene could fix or repair just about anything with his resourcefulness and ingenuity. It was often said by those that knew him best, " If Gene couldn't fix it, it can't be fixed." Gene was truly one of a kind and will be missed.
