Peggy Cross

1934 - 2025

Peggy Lee Philpott Cross passed away peacefully at Rosewood Village in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Monday, October 27, 2025. Peggy was born in Philpott, Virginia, on April 21, 1934, to Christine Prillaman and Charles Thomas Philpott Sr. She was the youngest of four children.

Peggy spent her childhood in Philpott with her siblings and cousins. She attended Bassett High School for three years and then attended Stratford Junior College in Danville, Virginia, for three years. After college, Peggy worked for Jim Wheat at J.C. Wheat & Co. in Richmond.

Peggy met Billy Wrenn "Bill" Cross at Liberty Heights Swimming Pool in Martinsville. She and Bill married on October 19, 1956, and settled into life in Martinsville. Peggy and Bill had three children: sons Michael Talmadge Cross and Brandon Philpott Cross and daughter Christina Cross. Sadly, Peggy and Bill's son Brandon passed away at age 25.

In addition to raising her children, Peggy was an active member of First United Methodist Church, a member of the Martinsville Garden Club, a volunteer for the Martinsville Library and the local hospice organization.

On Bill's retirement from Stone Container, Peggy and Bill bought a vintage Airstream and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. Peggy also made many trips to Europe with her lifelong friend Jane Tatum.

Bill reconstructed two cabins from West Virginia in Henry County. Peggy and Bill loved hosting family and friends at the cabin.

In 2019, Peggy and Bill moved to Charlottesville to be closer to Michael and his family.

Peggy was predeceased by her son Brandon Cross, her parents Christine and Charles Philpott, her sisters Betty Jo Martin and Lynn Wilson, and her brother Charlie Philpott. She survived by her husband Bill Cross, son Michael, Michael's wife Kathryn and their son Thomas Walker Cross as well as her daughter Christy.

A private graveside service will be held at Roselawn Burial Park in Martinsville, Virginia.
