Angeline Smith

Smith, Angeline Born in Coplay Pennsylvania on September 30, 1923, the fifth child of Nicholas and Angela (Batiska) Bushner, who met on the boat during their Atlantic crossing to Ellis Island, leaving behind their Ukraine and Polish homeland. Her parents were married at age 18 and had ten children. Angeline started school without knowing English and was near sighted but didn't realize it until she was tested in the first grade after failing. She repeated first grade after receiving glasses and was an excellent student afterwards. Angeline graduated from Whitehall HS in 1942 and right after graduation took a road trip with her brother Stan to visit her sister Sue in California, traveling in a Model T Ford. Returning to Allentown Pennsylvania, Angeline took a job at Hess Brothers Department Store and started college courses at Pennsylvania State College. She was a real asset to Hess Brothers and worked as a floater salesperson. Her personality made everyone she met a friend and sales came easy no matter what department she was assigned. Angeline was approached by the management of Graybar Electric Company and offered a new position of selling home appliances. She attended School in Chicago at the Hotpoint Institute and became known as the home economist "Barbara Gray", traveling to shows and demonstration sites for new home appliances and to private homes to teach the new owners the latest features in kitchen appliances. Angeline met her future husband in Margate, New Jersey during a dating adventure with her friends. She married Mr. H. Rodman Smith, a Lehigh University Graduate, in 1951 and became a Homemaker, Housewife, and eventually mother to seven children. She was very instrumental in her husband's career at Milton Roy Company in Philadelphia, where he rose to the top tier management position. All her children were born in Pennsylvania, but right after the seventh child the family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida where the Milton Roy Company built their new world headquarters. Angie, as she was known, became active in the children's schools, scouts, and church activities and was an active bowler in the Milton Roy League. She was president of the Gulf Beaches Elementary School PTA, and active in many fund raising activities for schools and church. Angie also raised money for the Florida Cypress Gardens Water Skiers to ski to from Florida to the 1964 World's Fair in New York. She was awarded the title of Mrs. Funtime Queen and a trip to the world's fair. After a brief stay in Danbury Connecticut, 1969-70, the family moved to North Palm Beach, Florida. The oldest children were in college and the youngest ones were in Jr. high and high school. Angie became active in the church, teaching CCD classes on Sunday and started part time work at Jordan Marsh in the Palm Beach Mall. She later managed a maternity shop at the Palm Beach Mall for a few years and then returned to Jordan Marsh full time to sell fine jewelry. She was awarded many sales achievements certificates for diamond and watch sales and later retired from Jordan Marsh. She was active volunteer for many years at the Royal Poinciana Playhouse in Palm Beach and later the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. She was also a key member of the Singles Dance Club of the Palm Beaches and the Singles Association of Florida, holding many club officer positions. She was involved with the Salvation Army women's Auxiliary of Palm Beach County, The Andros Isle Bridge Authority, Women of The Moose, the Forever Young Group, and at one time held a real estate license with Keyes reality. She was a member of Mary Immaculate Church. Angie loved to travel and meet new people. She made friends everywhere. Her travels included all the US and Canada, Europe, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Mexico, and many Caribbean Cruses. She is adored by her children and has touched the lives of so many people in such a positive way as to make everyone she meets a better and happier person. Survivors: Angie was predeceased by her husband Rod, her brothers Stanley, Clarence, Carl, John, and sister Sonya. She is survived by her brothers Ray, Michael, and Ed and sister Mary all living in Pennsylvania; sons Jay, Robert, Mark, Tim and Bill all living in Florida; daughters Jenifer and Margie, living in Florida; daughters in law Shirley, Lynda, and Janice; sons in law Leon and Jim; thirteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren. Services: Memorial Services will be held at Mary Immaculate Church, 390 Sequoia Drive South, West Palm Beach, FL 33409, on Tuesday August 11, at 10:30am with a mass. A reception will follow afterwards in Skaff Hall. The Mausoleum Entombment at Riverside Memorial Park, 19351 County Line Road, Tequesta, Florida will be for the family only.
