Brendan O'Brien Obituary

Dr. Brendan O'Brien, 85, of Macungie, died on Sunday, December 4, 2022, at home surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was married to Kathy (O'Donnell) O'Brien, with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage. Brendan was born in Eddystone, PA, the youngest son of Brendan and Elizabeth O'Brien. Brendan was a respected physician known for his love of family, passion for the outdoors, and ability to enjoy life to the fullest. He graduated from Mount Saint Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Maryland, and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia, PA. In 1968 Brendan moved to Allentown to start his career as an orthopedic surgeon. He was actively involved in the osteopathic community, a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, and served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Allentown Osteopathic Hospital from 1978 to 1990. He also led the Department of Orthopaedics for over 30 years. He concluded his medical career at OAA Orthopaedic Specialists in 2012. Brendan had a full life and many friends. He was curious and loved discovering new places and mastering hobbies. While Brendan was an avid hunter, fisherman, baker, and needle pointer, above all else, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He believed there was no better way to spend time than with his family – it brought him great joy. Brendan had a generous spirit and a positive approach to life. He lived his 85 years to the fullest and took every opportunity to learn, explore, and care for those around him.

Brendan is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy; his children, Kathy, Anne, Brendan, Marnie, Courtney, and Erin, along with his sons and daughter-in-law Michael Thompson, Geoff Geis, Beth O'Brien, Scott Yeaw, Chip Wadsworth, and Christian Treiber, his ten devoted grandchildren, Riley, Emmy, and Zoe Geis, Wescott and Kathrine Yeaw, Ben, Lucy, and Erin Wadsworth, Clare O'Brien and Max Treiber, and his sister Margaret Lombardo. He loved them all deeply.

To Dr. O'Brien's family.. Im late in learning of Dr. O'B's passing as I called him for some years. He did my first knee replacements in 1978. He was my forever favorite physician. He always saw me when I needed to be seen @ his office across from the hospital. We had a great relationship as Dr. &patient. Last I saw him was @ SLUHN retirement luncheon inOct. Of 2022. I'm very glad I saw him one last time. God bless all his family. Nancy wynkoop

O'B was one of a kind. Absolutely! Whatever he liked or whoever he liked he wanted all of his friends and family to "Like". One example was "Fly fishing". He became a master lure maker. He showed others how to do it and TALKED about it. On a very memorable occasion he invited me to be his guest on a fly fishing adventure in the EVERGLADES. I willingly accepted and OB set it up. He hired the guide, the boat etc. The day came and we embarked. Beautiful weather, Quiet as a church, experienced guide???, Brendan casting like he was on a TV show. Me watching intently. My turn. More instructions a few chuckles....His turn. The guides favors us with a few comments.
my tern!! a few more remarks by ob and the guide... O'B's TURN. 20, 30, 40,minutes go by..the guide gives me a bated line with a sinker attached and suggests that I drop the line off the stern. What a great day. I learned all I needed to know about Fly fishing and he and I had a great time. I really miss him and I am sure hundred of other folks are in the same boat. I think the name f the boat was "THe Green Bugger". It is very hard to think of him without smiling and thinking of all of the O'Briens who know all of his tales by heart would be ready to listen again in a heartbeat. TVI.

Kathy and family

My deepest sympathies for your loss. Brendan was my first employer when I graduated from PA school in 1976. At that time he took a chance on a young fellow who was probably the 1st formally trained PA in the Lehigh Valley. He was a great mentor and taught me a lot.
He was also my dear friend and did a lot for me when I lost my wife to cancer at a very early age of 24.
He also taught me the basics of hunting and was instrumental in helping me develop that interest.
After working with him, I moved on to other positions, but kept in touch for many years.
Was sorry to learn of this just today, and am sorry that I missed the services.
He was a good man and I´m sure he will be missed.

Kathy and Family

I have known Dr O´Brien, since 1975. I will say he was one of the best Drs I had the pleasure of knowing. Over the years we seemed to keep in touch. The last he treated me was in 2012at OAA. When my Mother had surgery for Cancer, at Osteopathic Hospital. I just had been told it was not good. I was outside her room, in tears. Dr O´BRIEN walked by. He saw I was upset. He took the time to sit with me till I could get my composure. He always showed such empathy. I was honored when he said my Apple Pie was as good as his. Just in the last couple of years, he pulled strings to get me an Appointment at Hershey. I could go on and on about how he helped me out. I am truly going to miss him. Their will never be another DrO´Brien I was lucky enough to meet his Grandson Max. He was so proud of him. I want to believe, when he got to Heaven Dr Connelly and Dr Stolz. We´re their to greet him. I not only lost a outstanding Dr, but also a friend.

Dr. O´Brien is the reason our family moved to Allentown. Through their enduring friendship, Brendan and Kathy, our Mom and Dad (Neil and Ceil) experienced many of life´s joys and tragedies. When our brother, Michael, passed shortly after birth and the Cathedral was undergoing renovations, it was the O´Briens who interceded on our behalf with St. Thomas Moore. Dr. O´Brien was consulted numerous times by our parents, siblings (10), and grandchildren. When our Father was sick, Dr. O´Brien came to visit.

Their sense of humor got them into their share of trouble with practical jokes, but their wry sense of humor and compassion sustained us all.

He was a force of nature and to say he will be missed weakly describes the gap he leaves.

With deepest condolences,

Ceil Connelly-Weida
