Daniel Spang Obituary

Daniel A. Spang, retired Chief of Police with the Colonial Regional Police Department, passed away Friday, November 3, at the age of 83. He was the eldest of 7 children born to Alfred and Rita (O'Donnell) Spang and was a 1957 graduate of Allentown Central Catholic. He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Bristol before joining the Pennsylvania State Police in 1964. During his nearly 30 year career with the state police, Daniel moved quickly through the ranks and retired as a Major assigned as the Executive Director of the Municipal Police Officer's Education and Training Commission for the final 8 years of his respected career. In 1995 he became the first Colonial Regional Chief of Police and served his community as such until 2002. Daniel was committed to learning and was proud to have earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in Police Administration and to have attended the Northwestern University Traffic Institute Management Program in Chicago. Daniel was happily married to his wife of 57 years, Linda, and enjoyed spending time with his daughter, Stephanie Spang Steinly, and his son-in-law, Dennis. However his greatest joy was time spent with his granddaughters, Caitlin and Abbie. In addition, he is survived by 4 of his siblings, Joseph (Christine), Hugh, Mary Jane Spang Orlando (Ed) and Buddy (Bobbi). Two of his brothers, Thomas (Patricia) and James (Michele) have passed. In addition to his love of learning, Daniel was an avid reader, a history buff and enjoyed every moment he spent fishing with friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to either the Alzheimer's Association or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. A celebration of Daniel's life will be held 11AM on December 2, 2023 in the O'Donnell Funeral Home. 908 Hanover Ave, Allentown, PA, 18109.

To say I feel incredibly saddened by the passing of Chief Spang, is a true understatement.

I worked with him for several years (as his secretary and secretary to CRPA) and the incredible knowledge he shared with me - priceless. His love of country and history - always mentioned in our conversations.

He always treated me like a daughter - always sharing his stories with me - both so very funny and some very sad. I still have the Longaberger baskets, which he filled with my favorite chocolates as gifts for various occasions.

He always spoke with much pride of his daughter Stephanie and his granddaughters - and of course, his beautiful Linda.

He was so very proud of the men at CRPD, I saw it every single day. I will never forget his dedication to the communities he served...always striving to guide his officers and share his experiences in law enforcement. He made CRPD - the best law enforcement agency in Northampton County.

We have lost an incredible man. I will forever cherish the friendship we shared and will hold him close in my heart and in my prayers.

On behalf of my family, I extend our most sincere condolences to his entire family - especially Linda and Stephanie. I will never forget the wonderful friendship we shared.

Rest in Peace, Chief - and, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, for all you did for me.

I was fortunate to have met Chief Spang when he led the Colonial Regional Police Department and I was serving with another local department. He was a wealth of knowledge and more importantly, willing to share it with his fellow officers. I consider him a valuable mentor as I'm sure many others do also. He was dedicated to all the communities he served and to law enforcement in general. Thank you Dan for your service and to his family for the support they must have given him. May God bless you all.

"A sailor has passed away today." The final battle is now over and peace has been restored. You have failed to make your battle stations during general quarters. You are now relieved from your watch. A job well done fellow navy veteran and community servant. America thanks you for your service to our country in the defense of freedom . The carrier has turned into the wind preparing for your final launch. Taps is about to sound ending a successful career as a nation´s defender. Smooth sailing shipmate. A Navy Vietnam Veteran.

Mike and I are so sad to hear of Dan´s passing. Over the years he and Linda have been such wonderful neighbors and we have such great memories. Dan´s expertise and contributions to our community and public safety are also noteworthy. He is missed.

I just learned of Major Spang´s passing and I want to send my sincere condolences to his wife, daughter, and family. He was not only a great state trooper, but he was also a great man. The Troop L Camp Cadet program was begun under his leadership and has positively effected the lives of thousands of young people for decades. His leadership in the Bureau of Patrol and at MPOETC set standards that are still followed today. Dan Spang will be missed by many and most of all by those who he mentored and set an example for during his time with us. Rest in peace sir, your journey though life was a full and most worthwhile one. God bless you!
