Darryl was the very essence of a great person. When I was a beginning teacher at Souderton Area High School, he made certain that I felt part of the group. He invited me to go deer hunting with Bucky Price and Tony Cipriano in Tioga County--- an enormously generous invitation. He invited me to play basketball with the teachers after school; Tony Cipriano, Bucky Price, Drew Darrah, Gary Hartman, Stan Holloway and others. In the English bookroom when we had breaks, we would talk about deer hunting, trout fishing, or about the great students and athletes at Souderton High School. He was passionate about good writing and literature. For all of his broad spectrum of interests and skills, he was humble, a remarkable quality for a remarkable man. To this day I am grateful for the kindnesses he showed me. I hope someday his family is able to find comfort in what he meant to many of us. May God embrace and protect Bonnie, their son and daughters and his entire family.

Coach Smith had a lifelong impact on me as my high school wrestling coach. Despite the fact that I was never a particularly successful wrestler Coach Smith inspired me to continue to work and get better always reminding me that success was not purely reflected in the immediate results of the moment but were all part of building character and who we become! I have shared his lessons to me with my children as well as those who worked with me over the years. I will always be grateful for the time he took teach me what was truly important. Rest In Peace Coach.

We pray that good memories will comfort Bonnie and the rest of his family.

I first met Darryl when we went to what was then called “Opportunity School” for 4th-6th grades at Jackson School in Allentown. Although we had no contact since high school graduation in 1961, I am left with one particular memory from 6th grade: There was a series of “bring your parent to school” days. Darryl brought his dad and had him play Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” for the class, which Darryl, with his distinctive smile, announced was his favorite piece of music. Everyone applauded, and Darryl was so very proud.
It sounds like his life continued to be filled with things his free spirit loved.

Darryl was a big part of my life since I was a young child. His loving and caring nature brought out the best in people. He became my Coach in high school and taught me so much more than wrestling. He was a role model for being the kind of person everyone should try to be. Rest in piece my friend!

Kind, generous, and dedicated to whatever he was doing. He loved teaching and coaching. Fishing and fly tying were his passion. His family was his world. I will miss him. My condolences to the entire Smith Family.

My association with Darryl precedes all others noted herein. Darryl and I were grade school "buddies" from 3rd to sixth grade at the Jackson School (that's 60+ years ago}. Beyond that, our lives diverged and we never crossed paths again, but his posting brought it all back to me. Remembering him as I do, I am not at all surprised to read of his many successes and his positive influences on friends, neighbors, and especially his students. May he rest in peace.

I met Darryl years ago while he was working in his garden. We struck up a conversation over his fence and often talked about the weather, the vegetables he grew in his garden, his family or whatever was in the news that day. He always had a smile on his face and really enjoyed his gardening. He was a really nice guy and I will miss his friendship.

Mr. Smith was easily my favorite teacher. I was able to tell him that in person at Mr. Price's wife's memorial service. Even then, he made me feel very special. An awesome man in so many ways. He was loved by many, including me. Hugs, prayers.

He was a great man! One of the several important male role models that I grew up with in Souderton. I knew him Best as my coach on the football team. He was a quiet guy that I could see but he was also extremely tough and fair.In short they don’t make them like him anymore!

My deepest condolences are with Mr. Smith’s family. He was an amazing teacher - and more than that - a truly caring person. I was fortunate to have been in his creative writing class in 1971-72. One can only imagine how many thousands of lives he influenced for the better. Thank-you, Mr. Smith, for giving and caring without measure.

Darryl was indeed an amazing man. He influenced my life in more ways than I can express in a short note. To me, he was my coach, teacher, mentor, and friend. He saw in me the potential that I couldn't see until later in my life. He had a way of drawing out the best in me. He cared for and loved his students and for some, like me, that endured for many, many years beyond high school. He will be missed, but he will live on through generations to come in the lives that he touched.

Mr. Smith was a warm and kind teacher. AP English is one of my fondest memories from high school, because of who he was and how he treated his students. My thoughts are with Erin and John, especially, as they were classmates of mine. Thinking of you all!

Bonnie I am so sorry for your loss... Darryl was a joyful person to be around... he loved to eat drink and be merry and always had great stories to tell. He was generous and kind and his love for life and curiosity about everything he encountered was apparent. Darryl was one of my husband's best friends and the first person he introduced me to along with Bonnie. We had some wonderful adventures together with both of them. Darryl won every wing eating extravaganza around our dining room table and was a favorite guest of our Spaniel Willow. He always gave us a review of his latest favorite book movie or television show as well as stories about the interesting people he met everyday. I can still hear him laughing as I write this. If there is a line for wings he has surely gone to the front of of it.
