Donald Sledz Obituary

Donald M. Sledz, MD, had a voracious appetite for life that led him to travel around the world and experience many of the wonderful things that he heard about from his patients and co-workers at Sacred Heart Hospital. He inspired this passion in others and was joined in his adventures by those close to him, including his long-time partner Nancy Hersch, his brother Leonard (Ana) Sledz, his former wife Dr. Ann Marie Sledz, and their children, Dr. Kelly (Brian) Freed, Cathy (David Monroe) Sledz, Don (Doris) Sledz, Tim (Marci) Sledz, and their eight grandchildren, Ceci, Sean and Megan Freed; Eva and Devon Monroe; and Julia, Jacob and Daniel Sledz. In the addition to the family members mentioned above, he is also survived by his loving nieces, Carol (Michael) Keys and Katherine Sledz. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Helen and Leonard Sledz.

As Chief of Urology at Sacred Heart Hospital, Dr. Sledz was a beloved mentor and impacted the lives of those he worked with and the thousands of patients he met and treated for over forty years. It was his life's passion. He loved his patients and co-workers as much as they loved him and his two Great Pyrenees dogs, Morgan and Bemus, whom he would bring on rounds…much to the hospital's chagrin. There wasn't anything he wouldn't do for his patients and his family.

A proud alumnus of Georgetown University undergraduate and medical school, his passion for medicine transferred to his wife Ann Marie who completed her medical degree after marrying Donald. The legendary stories of their Christmas parties for their combined practices are still talked about today, including the grizzly bear and the belly dancers. He also served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and told stories that sounded straight out of M*A*S*H.

When he wasn't traveling far and wide, he found joy in walking his dogs at Jordan Park with Nancy and listening to classical music (he thought no music should have been produced after Mozart!). An avid reader and true renaissance man, he enjoyed learning about art, creating things with his hands, the thrill of auctions, exploring world religions and more. There really wasn't a topic that didn't fascinate him.

He had a long and colorful life and when he passed away quietly on Saturday, March 12th, he was surrounded by those who loved him. He will be remembered fondly and missed by all who had the privilege to cross his path. There will never be another Donald M. Sledz.

I am truly filled with sadness after being informed of the loss of Dr Sledz. I had the honor of working with him for many years in the SHH OR. He was a very eclectic individual - a talented and caring physician, a person with various interests who took on each of them with a unique vest for life, and a loving and genuinely kind person. He touched many lives and will truly be missed by all. May he Rest In Peace.

Don was endlessly curious about everything from Jazz to Buddhism to Art and everything in between. We had so many great conversations over the 20+ years he was part of our family. His sense of adventure was always in full swing and I am so grateful that my Mom and him were able to travel and see the world together. I know we will miss him at every family gathering, but it´s some solace to know he lived life fully and on his own terms, and he added so much to our family.

Don´s enthusiasm for life truly was infectious. I know for a fact that no other person on this earth could´ve inspired in my mom Nancy as much adventure and zest for travel, camping, and new experiences as he did. I am truly thankful for the joy they brought to each others´ lives over the years. Don is also the only person I´ve known who may actually have loved and appreciated dogs more than I do-in that we were always kindred spirits, and I believe Don knew dogs had it figured better than most of us humans :). Over these past 30 years or so he´s been a welcome and appreciated addition and I always looked forward to seeing him. He will be missed, and I like to imagine he is now in a place with too many too big dogs, traipsing from one unexplored territory to another, and where the good music never ends. You finally got your wings Don, and we will see you again.

Such a wonderful doctor and all around good guy! I recommended him to many people. He cared for my father in law. His compassion for his patients and his interactions with us nurses was so appreciated! It was a privilege to have known him. Rest In Peace .

A true Renaissance man who always had a twinkle in his eye, he will be missed. His balanced sense of humour with serious artistic and intellectual curiosities made him a great person to be around. We are so glad we got to see him this last Christmas. He was the much awaited guest for my 6 year old daughter Aria who kept asking when Don was coming to eat and talk with her.

We will always have thoughts of him going forward in all seasons and colours of life.

A grateful American.

A fine Urologist and person. Don educated me as a resident 40 years ago and treated my father with respect and expertise. A heavy loss to the profession.

Dear Sledz Family- It was very sad to learn of Dr. Sledz´s passing. We have so many memories of him....back in high school it was my love for his Jag that was in the garage, seeing him at mass in the Sacred Heart chapel once Frank and I were married and staying in touch with him as we grew older because Frank was his patient. We will always remember him with a smile and are thankful for what he brought to our lives both as teenagers and as adults.

Experiencing a loss this profound can take quite a bit of time to move through. So be kind to yourself as you endure these difficult moments.

Please accept our heartfelt sympathy!
