My Gidu,
Please forgive me for being here in Afghanistan and not there with the family. I tried my hardest to leave but I couldn’t find any flights out of here. For some reason I know you understand and you’re in heaven watching over me…. I promise when I get back I will visit you and bring you, your pipe, a lottery scratch ticket, Kibee Nayeh and a glass of Arak……You were my best friend gidu. We had a special relationship that I will cherish forever. I will miss everything about you. I'm going to miss the smell of your after shave, your sweater vests, your big ears, the way you say 5 dollars, the way you treated situ amine, your advice on how to be a good person and the way you loved me. You made my childhood the best and you made me the man who I am today. I will never meet anyone like you. My goal in life is to be just like you. I am so glad I got to say that you when you were alive. Your reaction after I said that was priceless. Gidu you were an awesome person. Everyone respected you and loved you. Thank you for being my grandfather!! Helllllllooooo Mr. Barber. (Then you say) helloooooo Habibay David…. I will never stop loving you and I will never forget you Gidu George!! RIP

Dad,

For the past 42 years you have held me in your heart and have been a father to me. Thank you for sharing your love, smile, and great kindness with me and for embracing me as part of the wonderful Barber family. Words cannot express my sorrow; Although I wish you would have stayed with us much longer, I am a better person for having known you. Know that I will hold you always in my heart; you will never be forgotten.
