Joyce Lynn Obituary

Joyce D. Lynn
January 24, 1942 - April 5, 2014
I was born on January 24, 1942, to Zachariah Vernon and Minnie Derrick on a cold and snowy day in Salt Lake City, Utah. My two great loves growing up were school and music. I graduated Valedictorian from East High School in Salt Lake City. I have fond memories spending my summers working at the Jackson Hole Lodge in Wyoming. I met my husband and eternal companion, Ferris, on a reluctant blind date. We were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 6, 1963. Last fall Ferris and I celebrated our fifty year anniversary. After graduating from the University of Utah, my husband and I moved to Carey, Idaho, where we taught school for three years (every year I had seven different preps for the seven classes I taught). We spent a year in State College, Pennsylvania, then moved to Kamiah, Idaho, where I taught music for a half a day. After a year, we moved to Caldwell, which has been our home since 1970. Beginning that year, for the next 15 years, we took our family and spent whole summers in Stanley, Idaho, employed by the Forest Service. I have so many fond memories of our family camping and hiking in the Sawtooth and White Cloud mountains.
To satiate my love of music, I sang for years (and directed) the singing group ensemble, Thursday Musicale. I also taught piano lessons in my home as I sought to foster a love of music in others. Our six boys went to Wilder High School, where Ferris was the coach and sports became an integral part of our family's activities. For those of you who knew me, I am sure you heard me holler my displeasure at the referees more than a time or two.
I have had a wonderful life and I love my children and grandchildren very much. I have been blessed to serve in various organizations in my wards for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whether it be with music, teaching, or leadership. Some of my favorite responsibilities were teaching early morning seminary and working in the temple. Missionary work has been important to our family. Each of our seven children served missions all over the world. Ferris and I served missions to Albania, Russia, and Minnesota.
I was preceded in death by two grandsons. I am survived by my husband, Ferris; two brothers, Doug and Larry; six sons, Sean (Delmy), Joel (Jessica), Stuart (Rebecca), Jed (Dorie), Kendall (Stacey), Spencer (Laura), and daughter, Stacy Conley (Jared), as well as 18 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
When you read this, you know that I have passed on to paradise, where I am with my loved ones.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 11, 2014 at 10:30 am. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Caldwell Stake Center, 3015 S. Kimball Ave. There will be a viewing from 6-8 pm on Thursday, April 10, at the same location. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the General Missionary Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.dakanfuneralchapel.com.
We as a family would like to thank Saint Alphonsus Amedisys Hospice Care for the professional and tender way they cared for our wife and mother.
