Julio R. Martinez

1935 - 2023

Julio R. Martinez, 87, of Bethlehem, died on January 7, 2023, with his loving family by his side. He is the husband of Sandra (Giering) Martinez. The two were married March 20, 1957. Julio was born December 29, 1935, son of the late Mariano Zayas and Candida Martinez.

Julio will be remembered for his love of baseball, his friends, and most especially his family.

He dedicated many years to youth sports. Through his time coaching at Lehigh Little League and softball at Liberty High School, to umpiring at the Little League, Connie Mack, Legion and college levels, Julio enjoyed the friendships he made and the positive impact he made on young athletes. He was also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Julio worked for the Streets Department of the City of Bethlehem from 1971-1998. In retirement, Julio was a valued member of the staff at Connell Funeral Home. He was an active member of several local clubs over the years, including lifetime membership of the N.E. Wanderers A.A. and Jefferson Democratic Club.

Julio will be dearly missed by his wife, Sandy; his children, Carmen Billeaud; Candida, wife of Thomas Grube; Julio Jr., husband of Vicki Martinez; Helen, wife of Tim Mulllin; Jose, husband of Midori Martinez; and David Martinez; as well as 20 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and brothers, and sisters.

A service to celebrate Julio's life will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at Connell Funeral Home, 245 E. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Holy Saviour Cemetery. Per Sandy's request, dress is casual or anything in any Philadelphia Eagles attire.
