Kurt Zwikl Obituary

Kurt D. Zwikl, 72, devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal friend, and dedicated community servant, passed away September 1, 2021, at home in Allentown. He and his wife Barbara (Goodliffe) Zwikl celebrated 46 years of marriage in January. An Allentown native, Kurt's professional life was devoted to serving his community, starting with his election in 1973 at age 24 as the youngest ever Member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He served in the Legislature for twelve years, where he earned a reputation for integrity, intelligence, humor, and the ability to work across the aisle to advance the common good. He decided not to seek re-election in 1984, and worked in the banking industry for 12 years, becoming senior vice president for public affairs and government at the former First Union National Bank.

Kurt's love of history was apparent to all who knew him and was marked by his appointment by Governor Robert Casey to serve as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission from 1988-1995, and by his service from 2003 -2015 as the Executive Director of the Schuylkill River National & State Heritage Area. Kurt lived his passion for history, traveling the country to visit numerous presidential birthplaces and libraries with his family. He prized his collection of historical and political memorabilia, and if asked, could recount the story behind each treasured item.

Despite his many professional accomplishments, Kurt was most proud of his long, happy marriage and his family. He delighted in their achievements and the arrival of each of his four grandsons brought him great joy. A devoted fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Kurt enjoyed attending games with his son and debating football with his brothers-in-law. His children remember a father who taught by example the importance of love, loyalty, and service to others.

As president of the Allentown Economic Development Corporation starting in 1996, he oversaw numerous revitalization projects in the city's central business district. Kurt was a graduate of East Stroudsburg University and earned his master's degree in American History from Lehigh University.

Kurt's passion for his community was evident in the many organizations he served in a volunteer leadership capacity, including as a founding member of the Delaware and Lehigh Heritage Corridor Commission, a founding member of the Pennsylvania State Capital Preservation Committee and the Pennsylvania Keystone State Games Board of Directors, a past president of the boards of directors of the Baum School of Art and the Lehigh County Historical Society, membership on the board of directors of Lehigh Carbon Community College, the Liberty Bell Shrine, America of Wheels, the Board of Associates of Muhlenberg College, Cedar Crest College, Lehigh Valley Hospital and the Alliance of National Heritage Areas and Preservation Pennsylvania.

Kurt was recognized for his work by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and was named a Keystone Laureate of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. He also received community service awards from the Allentown Sertoma Club and the Scotty Wood Basketball Tournament at Muhlenberg College. He was the recipient of the Otto Haas Award in 1993 and in 2016 was awarded the James Biddle Award for Lifetime Achievement in Preservation.

A recognized expert in Pennsylvania history, Kurt published several articles on state and local history and in 1989, he edited and wrote the text for Taking Pictures, a book of photographs by his late father, a noted Lehigh Valley photographer.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown.

Kurt was preceded in death by his father, William R. Zwikl and his mother, Mildred K. (Kranch) Zwikl. In addition to his wife Barbara, he is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Zwikl Barnes of Allentown, his son Kent D. Zwikl, daughter-in-law Lisa Zwikl and grandsons Jacob Barnes, Justin Barnes, William Zwikl and Charles Zwikl.

A memorial service will be held on October 9, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown 3231 W. Tilghman St. Allentown.

I can't believe it's been 3 years since Kurt's death. It's hard to think about our friends who are no longer with us. Kurt certainly left his print on so many people and things. My thoughts and my very best to his family.

I know this message will come in very late, as I did not know about Kurt's passing until a classmate just mentioned it to me. I have been living out of state for almost 20 years but did get to see and speak to Kurt at the William Allen 50 year reunion. I remember him well from High School and I always liked him very much. He was a good and honorable person with much integrity. I just wanted to send my good memories, positive thoughts and sympathetic regards to his Wife and entire family. Tim Hawk

Mrs. Zwikl and family,

My sincere and deepest health-felt sympathy to each of you in the loss of Kurt.

As with many of us, I was shocked to learn of his passing. I had just seen a picture of Kurt from the 50th class reunion for Wm. Allen with a notice of the 55th being planned for next June; days later came the sad and shocking news.

I have known Kurt since 8th grade at Raub, but as things change quickly in HS, I saw very little of him. Obviously, it was wonderful seeing what Kurt was doing for his community in many more ways that I knew from the newspaper.....I must have missed some of the wonderful awards he won for his work. You must be so proud of him and rightly so. I know I was proud to say: "I knew him when...." At one point in his career he crossed paths with one of my step-daughters in his "work" at LVHN where she worked in Corp Affairs at the time. Ironically, with Kurt remaining in Alllentown and me in Salisbury Township, we never ran into each other....I never realized how big Allentown can be. I did see him at our 45th class reunion and his book signing and one time shopping at the South Mall with his son, although I pretty much hid as I was not looking ready to meet a former class mate, especially one of his esteem. I have some very old found memories of Kurt and I know that the family has oh so many, many more. May those memories of his life, well lived, give you comfort and peace during this time of grief and for many years to come. May the Lord shower you with strength and love as you adjust to life without Kurt. God's Blessings to the family.

With sincere sympathy,

CHERYL (SMITH) GAGLIARDI

Kurt and I were both Allen High Fighting Canaries and East Stroudsburg State College Warriors.
He was an impressive student-athlete during his high school and college days. A great teammate and friend. He waisted no time after college in returning home to Allentown and dedicating himself to family and community. He was the epitome of "giving back", and living a life of service to others. Condolences to Barbara and family.

Barbara and Family-
We were deeply saddened to hear of Kurt's passing. I was a fellow WAHS and ESU (ESSC) classmate and teammate on the Track teams. Kurt was also very helpful in early legislating for State Certification of Athletic Trainers practicing in Pennsylvania. He was a good friend and a true "class act". RIP Kurt!

I can´t really put in to words how shocked I was to learn of Kurts passing. To the family my condolences during this very difficult time

I had the good fortune of growing up with Kurt. Our parents employed by Hess´s, gave us the opportunity to be together a lot in our early years

Kurt was certainly a role model for me. No matter how much success he had in sports, academics, and his careers, he never forgot the people he knew from the beginning

Kurt was honest, caring, and a truly genuine person. Qualities that are not easy to find in these times.

It was truly an honor to have known Kurt.

To the family, you may rest assured that Kurt was someone who made a difference in this world

He will be missed but never forgotten

I recall Kurt´s leadership skills while attending William Allen High School. He was well spoken and very polite and this carried through his entire life. He was a true gentleman. I never heard him speak harshly of anyone. He served his community with honor and integrity. I was proud to call him my friend and I know his family is extremely proud of the life Kurt created for them.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Kurt and his family.

Rest In Peace, my friend.

I am deeply saddened to learn about Kurt's passing. To me he was a friend, teammate and representative of what is so right in the world. So much Service to so many and so many he touched - lastly in touch with Kurt regarding memorial to our HS coach, Fritz Halfacre and was glad I had a chance to spend time with him at our 50th Class reunion. Sympathies to his wife, children and grandchildren - cling fast to the amazing memories you have of a man that was truly exceptional. Although I have not lived in Allentown for many decades, Kurt will always be missed ... I contributed to ASD on the website, but not able to designate "Kurt Zwikl Scholarship". Rod

I served with Kurt from 1978-1984. I was a class act in every sense; giving, thoughtful, caring and a true public servant. In this time of grief remember all the good he did for so many and may that lasting legacy support and comfort you and the Zwikl family.
