I had the privilege of getting to know Letty and taking care of her while she resided at ProMedica.
She´s gone, but not forgotten. She was a wonderful woman.

Professor Eisenhauer is why the Borough of Manhattan Community College is the Harvard of Community Colleges in New York City. She inspired her students to think, dream and follow through with education. She believed in education; trusted its growing pains and kept those flames of education glowing, with that New York 'umph' of an educated worker that said: if you do the work now, it will do the work for you, and with you, in the future - that is education. Help your work and your work will help you.
Professor Eisenhauer was one of those cool white professors at BMCC who trailblazed and emphasized "Black Lives Matter" like they always mattered, and always will always matter. Professor Eisenhauer held the spiritual hands of Zora Neale Hurston to James Baldwin and Nina Simone through her work as a professor and counselor at BMCC. She had the strong and graceful spine of a Rosa Parks and Bessie Coleman.

She inspired BMCC students to work for their educations like a tree works from roots to branches - like an educated New Yorker works from bridge to bridge, taxi to taxi, library to library, book to book. Professor Eisenhauer had that Immanuel Kant kind of philosophy about her: "Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the more often and steadily we reflect upon them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me." Professor Eisenhauer reminded us why we are here.

I rented a room from Letty at 42 North Moore street during my 3rd year at New York Law School in 1982-83. I have fond memories of sharing space with her in her spacious loft in TriBeCa. On many evenings I came home to find Letty and Leda, her friend , laughing and drinking Boucheron wine in the convenient jug size. Letty treated me like I was her adopted son and made me feel very much at home. She attended my marriage in Connecticut in 1985. She had two cats: a male tabby, whom she spoiled and a Siamese female, named “madamoiselle,” who befriended me. On weekends she often left me in charge because she would go to Pennsylvania. She often brought home vegetables from her garden there. Leda once told me about Letty’s experiences in Manhattan’s Art scene in the 1960s and the outlandish “Happenings “, which apparently were pretty wild and risqué. I was aghast, of course. She was a little taken aback when I invited over a Japanese Bhuddist monk, named Ishibashi. I had joined him on several occasions when he would chant and beat a drum at the Speaker’s Corner on Wall Street. His order was very committed to nuclear disarmament. Life was never dull at 42 North Moore Streets. I have many fond memories of living there with Letty.

Letty was a dear. For us, what began as a work relationship with Letty became a friendship. We truly admired her passion for whatever she endeavored to do - building her house along the river, gardening, art, people, etc. Prayers to all of her loved ones.
