Mark Spease Obituary

Mark Andrew Spease, 51, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, died Sunday May 9, 2021.

Born in Michigan, son of Arthur and Jacqueline Spease, he was a graduate of the University of Michigan where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing.

From 1993 until his passing, Mark spent his professional career building Industrial Technology Research (ITR). Mark was in charge of business development and during his time, helped grow a small technology company to a leader in its industry serving customers throughout the world. In 2008, Mark became an owner of the company and continued his leadership overseeing sales and general management. As an extremely charismatic person, Mark's relationships were often strong lifelong friendships that extended well beyond business.

Mark's personal passions focused mostly on hockey, Fiddle Lake in northeastern Pennsylvania, friends, and family. He was an accomplished hockey player in his youth playing for both Union College and the University of Michigan Dearborn. In his adult years, he coached college hockey and was very active in the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Youth as a coach and administrator, helping build the organization into what it is today. As a member of the Fiddle Lake community since his childhood, Mark enjoyed summers in the mountains with his family. He was often found playing in the yard with his dogs, fishing on the lake for hours, and enjoying family bonfires. More than anything, he was immensely proud of his children, their academic and athletic accomplishments, and the people of character they have grown to be.

Mark has often been described as a selfless and devoted friend who was so close with many people that he was considered family. Never wanting for anything, he gave himself to people and would offer and provide anything he could without expectation of return. His time with friends and family was too short. He will be missed dearly by many.

Mark is survived by wife Amy, son Andrew, and daughter Hannah, all who reside in Bethlehem; mother Jacqueline, Vonore, TN; brother Michael and wife Kathy, Gap, PA; brother Mathew, Livonia, MI. Mark is preceded in death by his father, Arthur, and brother, David.

Memorial services will be announced at a later time. In lieu of gifts, the family asks for charitable donations made to an addiction center of your choice or the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Youth, "In Memory of Mark Spease", PO Box 1174, Bethlehem, PA 18016. Phantoms donations will support youth hockey, the organization he loved, and a scholarship fund helping kids in need.

I considered Mark as one of the nicest kids on the block. I remember playing in the backyard of his house with bunch of other kids on the block.

This one had an immediate no way attached to it... so many memories.
Mark and I went to elementary school together, it would be a understatement to say Mark was the coolest guy I new. Super athlete, smart, just smooth with everything. We talked on Facebook a few years back for a couple hrs, talking about life, family, work, our wives and how lucky we were. Although I haven’t seen Mark in 36 years, I am stunned and wish his family well.Quick story, Mark’s dad coached are baseball team, Mark was always full of confidence, he was on deck talking to us his teamates, “ hey guy should I hit a home run left handed or right handed” the boys ate that stuff up. Mark’s dad was competitive also, we were young, but Mark’s dad wanted to win, he would tell Mark bat right handed, sorry dad, he went lefty and hit a triple, remember it like it was yesterday. I smile when I think about him cause he was a guy’s guy, he was a solid friend and we were competitors on field day, The 50 yard Dash was our thing for 4 years and we would talk smack to the day, I saw mark many years later while he was attending Uof M, I’m glad I saw you that day. R.I.P my friend.

Should the Spease family be reading this, I want to send all my sorry, sympathy and condolences. I hated to hear about this justa few days ago. It's impossible for me to have a memory from elementary and middle school without Mark in it.(Livonia Falcons, 18 Sweep, and Mark rounding the corner, spinning off a tackle, outrunning the defense, and all I see is the back of his jersey and him sprinting for another touchdown. Then the celebration in the end zone, and coach Miller's Fist Pumps when we returned to the sidelines... such are the golden dreams of childhood).I was close friends with Mark for years. We were "M & M" at times, other times I remember playing Happy Days in elementary, Mark was the Fonz (I think i was Potsy). I remember his dad building sports cars in the garage and so much time spent at the Spease household on Fairlane. Playing Coleco Vision. Getting baseball games together down at Lincoln. He had talent and charm and intelligence and drive and always a crowd of friends around him. I can't imagine how hard this is. My sympathy and condolencesto the whole family and especially his children for a life ended way too early.

Mark and I went to high school together and remained friends through our lives. I am sure I speak on behalf of all his friends when I say how proud we are to be his friend. Nobody was more generous than Mark. While it hurts not to have his physical presence, we are reassured knowing his spirit lives on anywhere someone is taking a risk, or daring to do something uncommon, or great. Rest in peace, Mark. May God bless all of us, particularly Mark's family, with unfailing peace and comfort in times of need and challenge. Let us not be sorry that our time with Mark is over, let us be glad it happened.

When we moved to PA from MI about 8 years ago, Mark and his family welcomed us. He took Justin under his wing and gave him the opportunity to play hockey on the Flames and Phantoms. Justin also loved his time at the lake with the Spease family. This is just an example of the kind of person Mark was to so many. He had a heart of gold and will be sorely missed. We send our deepest sympathy and prayers.

I loved my friend, i entrusted him with both of my sons, Ian and Brendan to learn this great game of hockey and he surpassed that. My boys live and breathe hockey, His teachings got Ian recruited to Kents Hill Prep School in Maine which in turn got him a great education. Brendan has his own sports Blog and pod cast both called ," A Hit to the Head " . Which is all the result of Marks passion for hockey, that my sons inherited from him. I can not express my gratitude and love i have for Mark. I will miss him every day for the rest of my life. Everytime we spoke we always ended our conversation by saying lets get together soon, miss and love you brother, that is the one thing we did that makes me feel great.

Although your gone way too soon, Rest in peace my friend, Amen !

Mark's mother and I are life long friends. Mark and his siblings and my children grew up as "cousins" in every way and spent many great times together. There are no words to express my grief for his mom, siblings, and Mark's family. Mark has left his influence on so many young people and he will be missed by all. Rest in Peace. I will always have loving memories of the times we shared with the Spease family !

So many amazing memories in the last couple years. Mark has been one of the best friends I have ever had. He was a selfless and humble man, always willing to help someone in need. I will always remember the smile on my kids’ faces when Mark would pull up to our house or when they would see him at the lake.
I will continue to pray for family and friends of Mark. I know for a fact that he has touched many people in his life just as he has touched myself and my family.
Love,
