I'll always remember Mike as that fun-loving, mischievous cousin who brightened the world around him. Mike, you've been such an inspiration to me during these last years of your life. You taught me how to accept challenges as they are and to live life to the fullest, even within the limits of ALS. I'm so blessed to have known you! My sincere condolences to the Hirsch family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathy for your loss. I never met Mike but I did follow his writings in the Morning Call. I enjoyed his writings, they were always enlightening and wanting to read more. Through his writings I was in awe in his use of words to describe events, moments, feelings, and what he saw. Lastly he was an inspiration to me and I am sure many other people on how to be kind and compassionate person.
My prayers and thoughts.

Mike's witness to life shines so brightly, and he helped me and others shine was well, through his work at the Morning Call. He embodied courage and grace through his long struggle with ALS, and I am deeply grateful for what he shared with me and others. My prayers are with Melanie, Emily, Mathilde and your whole family who he loved so dearly. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Mike believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. He was a wonderful boss to work with. He used to say, "Would you mind doing such-and-such?" And I would answer "Yes, I mean no." To this day I use that phrase with people and think of Mike, and now I'll miss him, and his sense of humor, even more.

A remarkable man left this planet on his own terms. His disease took away his body but never his spirit. His life did not end. Rather, he completed his journey and now, he is at peace and lives with his Maker. He left strong memories, not just for his immediate family and friends but also readers at large. While facing ALS, he wrote eloquent, touching, and powerful essays. His words will reverberate with me for the rest of my life. He showed how to face adversities, including death, with grace, dignity, and courage.
I never met Mike. But I knew him through his words. I wrote him two e-mails and he responded to both despite his serious illness. What an amazing human being!
Rest in Peace, Mike.
My deepest condolences to his family.
