Paul G. Matus
Paul G. Matus, 89, of Bethlehem, died at home on Sunday, June 5, 2011. Born in Bethlehem, June 27, 1921, he was the son of the late Paul J. and Ann (Gal) Matus. He was the husband of Dorothy (Acker) Matus who died in 1976, and Dorthea (Theodoredis) Chiaparas Matus, who died in 2009. Paul was an Army veteran of World War II where he served as a cryptographic code clerk assigned to the 8th Armored Division, 80th Tank Battalion. He participated in the Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland Campaigns. He was awarded the American Campaign, European African-Middle Eastern Campaign, and Good Conduct Medals. After the war he graduated from Bethlehem Business College and held a position of loan officer at Wilbur Savings and Loan, later known as the Union Bank and Trust Company. He later became Vice President. He left banking in 1961 to become a consultant for small businesses as a franchisee of Whitehill Taxkeeping Systems of New York. He eventually became a director of training for the company. He then opened his own firm, Matus Associates, specializing in accounting and income tax preparation, in 1972. He was the past president of the Pennsylvania Society of Public Accountants. Mr. Matus remained actively involved in the business until his death. Paul was a member of Notre Dame of Bethlehem Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council #313, an also a past Grand Knight. He was a member of their bowling league for over 30 years. He also was an avid golfer, garnering a Senior Championship in the 1980s. Survivors: Mr. Matus is survived by his daughter, Paula Matus Ferry of Hazelton and her children, Maeve, Caitlin, John and William. Son, Scott P. Matus, East Allen Twp., stepdaughter Victoria Chiaparas, her son Joshua, and his children, Rebekah and Zechariah, step-son Emmanuel Chiaparas, and his children Theodore, Nicole, and Adam. He is also survived by his brother Joseph, Bethlehem, and sister Ann, New Carrolton, MD. Nieces and nephews also survive. The family would like to thank caregiver, Cecelia Cousins, for her support and dedication. He was also Pre-deceased by his brothers John Lefty, Eugene, and Frank. Services: A visitation will held on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Downing Funeral Home, Inc. 1002 W. Broad St. Bethlehem, PA 18018. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Notre Dame of Bethlehem Catholic Church, 1861 Catasauqua Rd. Bethlehem, PA 18018. Scott, I did not know Mr. Matus had passed other wise I would have been there. I am so sorry for your loss; I have enjoyed working for you and your dad. My deepest sympathy and prayers on your Dad's passing. I truly cared and admired Paul. Being a neighbor, we had some interesting chats about our condos. His obituary is a wonderful tribute to him and showed his special strength; I will remember him fondly.
