Penelope Nader Obituary

Penelope Grace (Johnson) Nader, the beloved matriarch of her family, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2023 at Country Meadows, Allentown, PA.

Penny was born in Buffalo, NY on June 23, 1935, the older of two daughters for Harry and Jane (McKibbon) Johnson. After graduating valedictorian from Winter Haven High School in Florida in 1953, where she was voted "friendliest" in her class, Penny joined the U.S. Army as a psychiatric ward nurse. While stationed at Texas' Fort Hood Army base, she met Thomas G. Nader, Jr., the love of her life, and the two married in 1954 while serving together in Munich, Germany.

Penny and Tom moved to Allentown, PA in 1955, where they raised their four children and became active members of the Lehigh Valley business community. Penny owned and operated Nader's Beauty Salon on West Street while Tom established Nader Brothers Exxon, a full-service station on Tilghman Street that he ran for more than 35 years. In 1993, Penny and Tom purchased H&M Concessions at the Allentown Fairgrounds. For nearly fifteen years, Penny and Tom became fixtures at the fair's weekend trade shows and summer concerts, where Penny's enduring beauty and bright personality (she greeted customers with an enthusiastic "hi honey!") won her countless admirers among the trade show vendors who lined up to order a barbeque sandwich or coffee from her. During this time, Penny also took on responsibilities hosting the Great Allentown Fair's annual cooking contests and serving as a director of the Lehigh Valley Agricultural Society, positions she continued to hold following her husband's death in 2002.

Penny's jovial nature was coupled with immense talent and creativity, and she forged lifelong friendships as she pursued her interests in painting, collecting and cooking. Penny's greatest source of joy – her family – were the true beneficiaries of her talents. Penny loved her family unconditionally, which she expressed through memorable holiday meals, summer pool parties and the gentle ways she helped cultivate her children's and grandchildren's own interests. Penny was surrounded by family in her final days, who will miss her deeply but take comfort in the belief that she is once again reunited with her beloved husband Tom.

Penny is survived by her children, Michael (Karen) Nader of Kennet Square, PA, Michelle (Vance) Powers of Fogelsville, PA, Barbara (Tod) Elliott of Allentown and Thomas (Shawn) Nader of Philadelphia along with her nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, and a sister, Judith Dellaratta.

Michael, Michelle, Barbara and Tommy and families. I am so sorry about Penny but I know she is at peace and with your Dad. Our families have been together forever, since the apartment on Second Street. West Street was my best memory. Your Mom and Dad trusted me to take care of their most prize possession...you kids. It was always fun! Being in the Beauty Salon and pretending I was a beautician and of course taking care of you four! Penny touched many lives. She was one of my Mom's best friends. She lives a full life and she will be missed by many. I love all of you. Prayers for your family at this difficult time.

Dear Michael, Michelle, Barbara and Tom and families,
I have been trying to come up with words that would comfort you all, but there are none. Yes, your Beloved Mother was the Matriarch of your family. She was a constant in your lives as well as so many others, me included. I was a neighbor on West Street growing up and she took me under her wing and helped me get my hairdressing license, shampooing, sweeping the floors, anything so I could learn from the best. I will always remember her gentleness, kindness and her love of life. She taught me so very much. My memories of your Dad are also a special part of my childhood memories. What a dynamic duo they made.
I don't know if you remember that I also babysat all of you. Greatest kids on the block, and we certainly had many ! I know that she was so proud of each of you and her love for her family was her inspiration always. She loved you all so much and I am sure she was just as wonderful to all of your children. That's what she did, she shaped others to be the best that they could be. I am truly sorry for your Loss, words just are not enough. She was a very special Lady and someone I will never forget.
God grant her eternal rest, O Lord, and may her family know your peace and comfort.
Remember all of her special qualities and cherish each memory of her. Hold her presence in your hearts and never forget how much she loved each of you.
God Bless you all, and know that each of you are in my thoughts and prayers and she is in my heart forever.

Michael,
The fact that when I recently saw you at our CCHS reunion one of the first things I asked you was "how´s Penny doing?" To say that she made an impression on me as a young man would be a gross understatement.
To all of the Nader family, please accept my deepest condolences and know that she is now at rest in the arms of her maker.
Tony
