Phyllis Carter Obituary

Phyllis J. Carter, 99, of Tamaqua and formerly of West Chester, died on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at home. She was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Esther (Fink) Carter. A 1942 graduate of Tamaqua High School, Phyllis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Albright College in 1946. Before retiring in 1981, she was employed by the former Atlas Powder Company, later ICI Americas, as an analytical chemist and manager of product development and advertising. She also served as the 33rd president of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. Phyllis was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Tamaqua. She began serving as a director for the Tamaqua Public Library in 1981, where she also served on the Library Endowment Fund. She is survived by a niece, Nancy Reese and her husband William and their children, Douglas Reese (Melissa), Christine Butler (Richard), and Karen Reese, and a nephew, Thomas S. Carter and his children, Charles H. Carter III (Tammy), Peter Carter (Jennifer), and Laura Crawford (Peter) as well as 10 great-grand nieces and nephews. Phyllis was predeceased by a brother, Charles H. Carter, Jr., in 2017. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM on Sunday, February 18, 2024, in the First United Methodist Church, 124 West Broad Street, Tamaqua with Pastor Deb Forney officiating.
