Robert Dorney Obituary

Robert "Bob" Cleon Dorney, 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 24. Born in Dorney Park, Pennsylvania, to Warren and Mabel (Stauffer) Dorney, Bob is survived by his wife of 22 years Hazel Sherry Dorney and his three children and their spouses: Craig Dorney (Sue), Faye Dorney Madgitz (Harvey) and Keith Dorney (Katherine). Also there are four step children, E. Vincent Sherry (Noreen), Anne Ecker (Christian), Colleen Dooley (Peter), and Thomas Sherry (Anne). He was predeceased by his first wife of 44 years, Audrey Ryback Dorney. He leaves behind five siblings: brothers William and Richard Dorney and sisters Jean Walk, Betty Grey and Nancy Steltz. His also has six grandchildren, six great grandchildren and eight step grandchildren. Bob had a long and illustrious career as the President and General Manager of Day-Timer, the time diary company formerly based in East Texas, Pennsylvania. The family business, Dorney Printing, was started as a hobby by father Warren while Bob and his siblings were teenagers. The entire family, including Bob's mother Mabel, worked in the business. Bob's participation was interrupted by World War II, when he was assigned to print top secret documents for the new B-29 bomber. His newfound lithography skills were instrumental when he returned to the family business, which was soon merged with Day-Timer. Day-Timer continued as a strong family run business, providing thousands of jobs for Lehigh Valley. Bob retired in 1988 after serving as Group Manager of the Direct Marketing Division for Beatrice Companies, Inc, which acquired Day-Timer in 1972. The Dorney family has a long history in the Lehigh Valley. Bob's great great grandfather, Solomon, founded Dorney Park in the late 19th century. Even though the park was sold in the early 1900's, the park's name remained, and the family continued to live within the park's confines for many years. In addition, the village of Dorneyville was named for the four brothers who settled on the corners of what is now the intersection of Cedar Crest Boulevard and Hamilton Boulevard. Bob was well known for his kindness, work ethic and generosity. Over the years, Bob has given freely of his time and talents to many civic, religious and charitable organizations and causes and held numerous positions with Lancaster Theological Seminary. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone and is fondly remembered and loved by many. Memorial Services with military honors will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 12 Noon at Cedar United Church of Christ, 3419 Broadway, Allentown, PA 18104. Visitation 10:30 to 12 Noon in the church. Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., Emmaus is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lancaster Theological Seminary, 555 West James Street, Lancaster, PA 17603.

Remembrances are gifts - even as Bob was a gift. I was glad to hear that a special time of remembering Bob will be happening soon.

In my upper left-hand desk drawer, I still have a packet of rubber-band- bound Day-Timers, the last of which is from 2000, when I retired and began keeping track of what was going on thru my I-phone. Call it nostalgia, but that packet also keeps me in touch with my remembrances about Bob and his easy going wisdom and his personal interaction with each of us who shared such a myriad of experiences with him. I cherish a poignant memory of Bob, when in a conversation about many things, he told me that he was going to transfer his church membership from Hope to Cedar UCC, which he said was difficult but that he wanted to spend his worship time with his mother who was well on in age. We both knew this move would undoubtedly mean a change in the times when we would rehash a provocative sermon by Claude Dencler or recall and share some incidents of our own respective spiritual journeys. I treasure those memories, as I know each of you do as you recall your unique recollections.

Bob was a joy to know. He inspired so much in all of us.

So sad to learn of Bob's passing. He was a man I admired and look-up to. During the early 1970's, while working as an air cargo salesman, I called on Bob. We struck up a good rapport. I was an avid user of Day-Timers, and was surprised to see my business card in the card holder used in the next catalogue. It was the card I gave Bob when we first met. Later I worked for Joe Segel, the founder of the Franklin Mint. He told me the story one day that while he was a professor at University of Pennsylvania, he had a calendar he sold to others to be organized - and he sold it to Dorney Printing to raise money to start the Franklin Mint. Small world. Bob and I stayed in touch from time-to-time. Whenever I was faced with a career decision, I would run it passed Bob for his comments. What a gem of a man. I was another one of the people probably no one in his family knew were so positively affected by Bob. RIP my friend.

Dear Hazel and Faye and family,

The description of Bob as someone who would...give the shirt off his back is so apropos. But Bob also gave of what he was as well as what he had. We were privileged to know him both thru Hope United Church of Christ where he was a member for many years and thru the Lehigh Conference of Churches, where his ideas indirectly helped shape our vision. Bob shared his wisdom as well as his substance and was always available for a little brain picking. His gifts were both practical and driven by conviction. He always had time to offer his guidance, adding his special insights to enable half-baked ideas to become viable endeavors.

A special remembrance is when Bob told us that he was going to transfer to Cedar UCC where his mother was already a member so that he could make sure she got there whenever possible. We knew we would really miss the Solomon-like energetic candor he brought to our congregation, but knew it was the kind of decision a good son would make.

My sorrow for the family of Mr. Dorney - an immeasurable loss! In the '80s I worked a year at Daytimers (Temp Svc) and even now, in later years of my life, I am still impressed by the gentle kindness, integrity, and humility of this man, who was our "Big Cheese". I didn't even know who he was at first, when he stopped by my desk and asked, "How do you like it here?" And then, "My door is always open." He was happy with my answer and I was floored that he CARED. He genuinely did. God bless him forever.

Dear Dorney family, It's with great sadness that i write this note of sympathy in the passing of Bob. I worked for Dorney printing/Daytimers from 1972-1998 and have nothing but pleasant memories of Bob. Strolling thru the print shop or bindery several times a week and greeting us as he passed . he leaves a great legacy of kindness and great work ethics. Surely you as his family have lost a truly giant of a man!!Deepest regrets, Marlene Shoemaker
