Ronald Rieder Obituary

Ronald H. Rieder born October 14,1932 in Taylor, PA., passed away on June 29 at the age of 88. Ron was the son of the late Helen (Roche)and Herbert Rieder. Ron is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Carol (Marone) Rieder, children Randal Rieder (Cheryl) West Chester, PA, Mark Rieder (Lori) Brentwood, NH, Kathy Schoenen (Rob), Shillington, PA and Dana Hinson (Paul) Franklinville, NJ.. He loved and was proud of his 11 grandchildren - Sean, Rachel, and Mathew Rieder, Jonathan, Nicole, Luke, and Emily Rieder, Caitlin and Kevin Hinson, Trevor and Jay Schoenen. Ron is also survived by nephews Noel Rieder, Jerry Rieder and Anthony Marone, and niece Nina Marone, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Anthony and Deborah Marone, many cousins in the Scranton area and family from a previous marriage. Ron was predeceased by his parents, his brother Robert and former wife Laura Rieder. Special thanks to the friends and neighbors who were always there to help and support Ron and Carol, Family Pillars Hospice and the staff at Whitehall Manor who cared for Ron over the last months.

Ron was a graduate of Taylor High School, East Stoudsburg State Teachers College, Lehigh University and also attended Penn State University, Villanova University and San Diego State University for graduate studies.

An avid tennis player Ron looked forward to joining friends on the courts every Wednesday and Friday and then going to breakfast at the Brass Rail. He loved to watch tennis as well as play and always dreamed of seeing all of the major tennis tournaments. Ron went to the US Open for over 25 years, later he traveled to the French Open, Wimbledon and the Australian Open. One of his favorite tournaments was the BNP Paribas held in Indian Wells, California where he looked forward to watching his favorite players up close. He also enjoyed watching players at the Miami Open. Ron loved to walk and ride his bike. Neighbors always knew him by the way he walked and laughed when they saw him walking backwards up or down a hill. He disliked going to the beach but loved walking the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ. He was often seen walking or biking 10-15 miles ever day when he was there. Ron was a great shopper and loved buying gifts for family members. He was happy to spend an afternoon at the mall and eating a hot dog at Dunderback's or Yocco's. Ron and Carol enjoyed traveling across the U.S. and also visited many countries. A people person, Ron always found someone he knew and enjoyed talking to them wherever he was. Ron also loved animals and until recently always had a dog in the house. He loved Elsa, Miss Mittens, Snickers and especially Jingles and Jitterbug. Ron served his country honorably in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1954-56. He began his teaching career as a science teacher in the East Penn School District in 1956. Later he became assistant principal of Emmaus Junior High School, Eyer Junior High School and Emmaus High School. He also worked as acting principal of Shoemaker Elementary School. Ron disliked going to meetings but was always available to chaperone dances or attend school functions. He learned the names of thousands of students during his 37 year career and was always happy when students remembered him with invitations to reunions or other events. Wherever Ron went he knew several people and was always the center of conversations. He called former students when he needed work done at his home and they always referred to him as Mr. Rieder. When he called they came. Ron was a member of the Pennsylvania Association School Principals (PAASP) and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR). He was a firm believer in membership in the Smithsonian Institute and the National Parks Association. Ron visited almost all of the national parks in his lifetime.

He was my 8th grade science teacher and our student council advisor. He was a soft spoken man with gentleness and quiet strength. I remember seeing him walking to school with a fellow science teacher William Miller. He was a great example. I also became a science teacher in 8th grade. He was a a great role model.

Very sorry to hear about Mr. Rieder. I was one of his students the 1st year he taught at Jefferson Jr. High in Emmaus. He is still one of my favorite teachers. What still amazes me is that even though it had been almost 60 years since I'd had him for a teacher, he remembered my name at a class reunion (and no name tag to remind him!). He claimed he remembered everyone from that year as we had made his first year teaching "easy". Bon voyage Mr. Rieder.

Love to Mr. Rieder's family. I always felt like Mr. Rieder "had my back" when I attended Emmaus Jr. High where he was Vice Principal, which should not be confused with being soft on discipline or maintaining proper decorum. He was fair, he listened intently, and he remembered details. RIP Mr. Rieder.

I am saddened to hear this news. Mr. Reider was a legend for many East Penn School District Students. I am certain he had an influence on many, including me.
As a student, he always acknowledged me by name. As an adult, we often passed each other, while he was walking and I was running. We always had an engaging conversation in those few minutes.
My thoughts to Carol, and the rest of kin.

To the Rieder family...So many of my childhood memories involve your Dad and your family. From the infamous picnic when Mark and I took a roll on my bike to the many camping trips and those instances where I got to "visit" him in his office at the junior high ( I dont know why!) He was a great influence on my life and I will always remember him.

To Mr. Rieder's Family,
As a former student of Mr. Rieder, I remember him as a caring teacher who always had time for his students. He took the time to provide after school tutoring when I had missed many classes due to illness. He was always patient and had a sense of humor. May God hold him in the palm of His hand.
