Sharon Bates Obituary

Sharon Bates, 67, of Wescosville, passed away with her family by her side on January 24th, in the comfort of her home after a long battle with a rare neurological disease. She was happily married to Jack Bates for 41 years. Sharon was born in Hartford, CT. on April 24, 1953. She was the daughter of the late William Oaks and the late Gertrude (Riley) Oaks.

She was clothed with strength, dignity and an inner peace and quietness people admired. This, combined with a quick wit, kept the same people on their guard. As a believer and follower of Christ she invested her talents as a wife, mother and faithful friend.

She was a natural homemaker and mother. She was known for her skills in baking and gardening. She administered the home front with the finesse and commitment that a military general would envy, combined with a gentleness and smile that made everyone feel welcome. Her love of animals led her to earn a degree in biology from Anderson University in Indiana, allowing her to work for various animal clinics as a veterinary technician. She also had a wide scope of volunteer roles at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Phoebe Home, Meals on Wheels, Dough to Door and many others.

In her free time, she played tennis most often at the West End Racquet Club. She was a gifted athlete and had a full schedule of league matches where she was voted as the most aggressive player by her team. When she wasn't playing tennis, you could find her and Jack on the dance floor swing dancing.

She and Jack were known for their hospitality and strong partnership; they hosted many small group Bible studies and neighborhood parties over the years. Sharon was also a gifted speaker in many women's groups and Bible studies. Her life was lived with purpose, and she will be sorely missed.

Survivors: In addition to her husband, Jack, she will be lovingly remembered by her children Emily and fiancé Ryan and Sally, along with her five grandchildren, her sister-in-law Sue and Sharon's three younger siblings Connie, Ken, and Stan.

Services: A funeral service will be held on Friday January 29th, at 11:00 AM at Bethany Church 1208 Brookside Road Wescosville where the family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at the Bethany cemetery located on Lower Macungie Road. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions social distancing and facial covering protocols will be followed.

Arrangements by the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, Allentown. Condolences may be offered at: www.jsburkholder.com

Sally and family,
I don't know if you remember me but I was your teacher in first grade. I was so sorry to hear about your mom but it sounds like it was one of those sad blessings. I know she had a strong faith and you can be confident that your mom is rejoicing in heaven. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thanks for many many tennis victories, Partner. We traveled and bunked together to many tournaments. I learned from the strength of your faith in shared conversations. I cherish lots of fond memories.
