Daddy, you were always my hero and now you are the neighborhood's hero as well.

My poem to the GREATEST father in the world:

If there's King Kone ice cream cones in heaven, Lord feed my dad a few, but remember he wouldn't want a cherry, especially not two! Tell him that I love and miss him- and when he turns to smile, place a kiss upon each cheek and hold him for awhile. Remembering him is easy, I'll do it everyday, but there's an ache within my heart that will never ever go away. xoxo

I miss you so much dad :*(...I will always be your little girl and I know you are right beside our family everyday protecting and giving us strength. I LOVE YOU! xoxo

Janet & family,

Our deepest condolances on the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of your husband/father. You remain in our thoughts and prayers.

July 6, 2010

Two ideas/thoughts on this wonderful man & his passing:we are there for his family, here&now. For those who are relatives&friends, keep Steven's wife&children close..the hardest times for them may come months, even years, after their terrible loss..grieve with them now,but include them & keep them in your lives..do not take their'return to daily living'for granted..they need you now,but they will need you MORE as time passes.Secondly,I hope that someone will propose a memorial or scholarship in his name.I am sure, with the outpouring of tributes we have seen, that people all over this country would be proud to be part of it.God be with Steven's widow & children..for the rest of their lives..a former Northampton resident

I was Steve's Vice Principal at Central Catholic. He was a really good guy and took after his father, Ted. by being involved with his friends and the school. I believe he was a martyr who did good for others despite what he knew would be a most dangerous situation. May he rest in the Hands of the Lord. May the family find some solace in the knowledge that the Lord will provide and their husband and father is truly "one in a million."

To the Zernhelt Family,
I had the honor of knowing Steve for the 4 years He spent with us at PK. It is with a very heavy heart the sadness I feel that His life was taken while trying to help others. I know that God has taken him for a higher reason and he will watch over the family he loved so dearly. He was one of the best people I have ever had the pleasure to work with. His laughter and love of life made all those who knew him laugh with him and leave the troubles of their day behind. May his kindness and love guide your family thru this difficult time.
God bless your family and know that the Lord is watching over you.

To the Zernhelt Family,

Our deepest sympathy to all for such a tragic loss. We have know Jim and Adriane for 20 + years and we do not know what to say to get them through this. There is no doubt that Steve's act of kindness, trying to protect those in need, showed his strength to help his neighbors and friends. May we always remember that acts of kindness do not go unjudged. Our religion acknowledges the good that we do for mankind. While this is a huge loss for all of Steve's friends and family, there is no doubt that he is in Heaven.
Prayers to all that everyone someday will remember Steve's heroic act without the unbearable feeling of the loss and emptyness that this has caused.
Our sincere condolences to all,

I no longer live in Pennsylvania but read the Morning Call online. I was at first horrified at the story and then saddened when I realized it was Steve. I knew Steve and his older brother Harry and Harry's wife Debbie as a kid. They would come up to Green Street to hang out. I didn't know Steve well, I knew Harry better and was closest to Debbie but I remember Steve as being a nice kid. I must admit I also felt pride and awe while reading the story as I realized what a selfless and honorable man Steve grew up to be. The world would certainly be a better place if there were more people like Steve. How proud his family must be. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Zernhelt family. STEVE is how you truly spell HERO.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
